LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Junior Finley Amato tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Davidson field hockey team to a 4-2 win over Siena Sunday afternoon at Siena Turf Field.
Siena (0-7) scored the game's first goal in the fourth minute, but four different Wildcat scorers tipped the game decisively in Davidson's (3-3) favor.
“Once we started connecting in the midfield, we generated a lot of opportunities in the circle, and it was great to have four different players score,” said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. “It was a very good team effort today.”
Michaela Sullivan scored off a pass from Olivia Whelly for an early 1-0 Siena lead, but Amato answered for Davidson with an unassisted tally in the seventh minute.
Amato earned the helper on Davidson's second goal, directing the rebound off a shot from senior Hannah English to senior Krista Jackson, who found the back of the cage with her second goal of the season. Senior Christine Rua added a goal in the 25th minute to give the 'Cats a 3-1 lead heading into halftime.
“I was glad to see us attack hard as it was disappointing not to score against Albany,” said Turner.
Senior Meg Jarrell padded the lead in the 43rd minute with a goal assisted by junior Annie Evans. Mackenzie Smith cut Siena's deficit to two with a penalty stroke goal in the 52nd minute, but neither team would score for the rest of the game, finalizing the 4-2 score.
Defensively, the 'Cats bent but did not break, allowing a season high 25 shots and 19 penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Fisher was strong in the cage, making five saves in nearly 52 minutes of action and allowing one goal. Sophomore Carolyn Macek finished out the game in her first action of the season, making three saves and yielding only the penalty corner goal.
Amato played an aggressive game offensively, firing a career-high 11 shots. Davidson totaled 21 as a team and had 10 penalty corners.
The game concluded a four-game road swing for the 'Cats, who will return to Belk Turf Field for a match Saturday at 1 p.m. against Robert Morris.
Notes: Amato now leads the 'Cats with eight points (3g, 2a) … the 'Cats have had a tough schedule to start the season as five of their first six games were on the road and two games were against Top-20 teams … the schedule will not get any easier soon, as a trip to No. 1 North Carolina is scheduled the day following the Robert Morris game.
