Field Hockey Opens Season with 2-0 Win Over Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Davidson junior Annie Evans scored twice in the second half, while classmate Sarah Fisher made eight saves to blank Georgetown and give the Davidson Wildcat field hockey team a 2-0 season-opening win Friday afternoon at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex. The Wildcats' game against LaSalle Saturday has been cancelled due to Hurricane Irene.
Evans (Lake Forest, Ill.) notched goals in the 53rd and 62nd minutes, and Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) held strong in the first half, making five saves as Georgetown (0-1) outshot the 'Cats (1-0) 9-6 in the first frame.
“Sarah Fisher played amazing for us and had some major saves early,” said head coach Ginny Turner. “We played a much more composed game in the second half and connected much better.”
Evans' carried the ball into the circle and ripped it past Georgetown goalkeeper Briana Pereira for the first goal. She then tipped in a rebound on the left side of the cage for the second.
Georgetown held the upper hand in the first half with advantages in shots and penalty corners, but the 'Cats rallied in the second half, outshooting the Hoyas 10-4, to take a 16-13 advantage for the game. Evans and junior Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) each had four shots to lead the team. Senior Hannah English (Louisville, Ky.) had three.
“It was a great way to start the season,” added Turnerr. “I'm very glad we were able to make some great adjustments in the second half. It's disappointing we can't play tomorrow, but it feels good having a win and a week to practice before our Louisville game.”
Georgetown's Pereira finished with seven stops, and the Hoyas finished with a 13-6 advantage in penalty corners. Catherine Shugrue led the team with six shots, two on goal.
Davidson was originally scheduled to play La Salle Saturday as part of the Georgetown Field Hockey Invitational, but the game was cancelled to due Hurricane Irene. They will next open their home slate Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. at Belk Turf Field against No. 16 Louisville.
Notes: Annie Evans' multi-goal game was the first of her career … seniors Krista Jackson and Meg Jarrell earned their first career starts … Sarah Fisher's shutout was the fifth of her career.
