ELON, N.C. — The Elon Phoenix secured the series victory over the Davidson Wildcats with an 8-2 win Saturday night at Latham Park.
Thomas Girdwood (W, 3-4) held Davidson (18-24, 8-17 SoCon) to one run on three hits and struck out a career-high 10 in eight innings. Second baseman Sebastian Gomez batted 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead Elon (29-17, 17-6 SoCon) at the plate.
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first, as sophomore shortstop Michael Zeblo (1-for-3, RBI) drove in junior second baseman James Cerbie (1-for-2) with a two-out base hit in the second inning to snap Elon's 19-inning streak of not allowing a run.
But Elon knotted the game up in the bottom half when second baseman Garrett Koster doubled in catcher Alex Swim (single), and the Phoenix added a pair of runs on three hits and an error in the third inning. Center fielder Harry Austin legged out an infield single and was sacrificed to second. Horkley got right fielder Niko Fraser to fly out before Elon put together back-to-back, two-out hits for a pair of runs. An error extended the inning, but Horkley got a ground ball to leave the bases loaded.
Payne hit a two-out single in the fourth and freshman catcher Daniel Gerow drew a leadoff walk in the fifth, but Davidson didn't get a run in either inning. Elon added two more on three hits and an error in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Fraser led off with a base hit to right and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt before scoring when Gomez doubled down the left field line. After Horkley fielded a popped up bunt, Swim's RBI-single to center drove in Gomez. RHP Danny Mooney got the final two outs to strand a pair.
Mooney tossed a shutout sixth, and freshman RHP Jip Richards shut down the Phoenix in the seventh. Gerow drew a second walk in between to give Davidson a base runner, but Girdwood used a double-play ball to keep the 'Cats in check.
Elon did its final scoring in the eighth, scoring three runs on three hits and an error, and Davidson added its final run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from senior pinch hitter #J.P. Craven#. Senior right fielder Sam Payne (1-for-3), who hit a one-out single, moved to second on Cerbie's infield single and took third on a wild pitch, scored for Davidson on the play.
Davidson tallied four hits, one each for senior designated hitter Danny Weiss (1-for-3), Payne, Cerbie and Zeblo. Senior RHP Ian Horkley (L, 4-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
The Wildcats and Phoenix will finish the series tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Junior RHP Ryan Overcash (2-4, 3.28) will start for Davidson.
