Box Score

ELON, N.C. — Garrett Koster went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Elon Phoenix to an 8-3 win over the Davidson Wildcats in the series finale Sunday afternoon in SoCon baseball action at Latham Park.

Davidson (18-25, 8-18 SoCon) scored a run in the first as junior first baseman Drew Gadaire (2-for-4, RBI) doubled in freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt (1-for-4). But Elon (30-17, 18-6) scored eight unanswered runs before the Wildcats added lone scores in the seventh and eighth innings.

Dylan Clark (W, 2-3) held Davidson to two runs on five hits and struck out five in seven innings to earn the win. The Phoenix finished with 12 hits, led by Koster and right fielder Niko Fraser (3-for-3). Second baseman Sebastian Gomez (2-for-5) drove in a pair for Elon.

Davidson finished with nine hits, led by junior center fielder Seth Freeman (2-for-3, RBI) and Gadaire. Sophomore right fielder Coleman Barron, who also had two stolen bases, and junior second baseman James Cerbie also finished with two hits. Junior RHP Ryan Overcash (L, 2-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits with one strikeout in four innings.

Freeman singled to center field in the game's first at-bat but was erased on fielder's choice in the next at-bat. Brandt, though, scored the game's first run as Gadaire smacked a two-out double to left field.

After a leadoff single from Cerbie, the Wildcats took advantage of a two-out error and walk to load the bases in the second, but Clark got out of the jam with a fly out. Elon put together two straight singles from designated hitter Alex Swim and catcher Ryan Kinsella and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom when Koster doubled the pair in.

Clark faced the minimum in the third, and Elon tacked on another run in the home half to go up 3-1 as Fraser hit a leadoff triple and scored on a passed ball. Overcash got three straight outs to keep it a two-run game, but Elon added a pair in the fifth on Koster's two-run home run. Kinsella worked a leadoff walk and scored on the play.

The Wildcats had base runners in the fourth —Barron with a two-out double, and fifth — Brandt with a one-out walk, but Clark stranded both. Elon added a score in the bottom of the fifth on three hits and a two walks. Senior LHP Mac Hunter came into the game and picked off Fraser (single) but loaded the bases with a pair of hits and an intentional walk before a bases-loaded walk scored Elon's sixth run.

Freshman RHP Jip Richards took over and retired two straight hitters to leave the bases loaded but walked a pair in the sixth to bring in senior RHP Mike Frongello, who tied his own single-season appearance record with his 34th of the season and moved into second in SoCon history with his 131st career appearance. After Fraser stole second to get into scoring position, Gomez's two-RBI single extended the Phoenix's lead to 8-1.

Davidson scored a run in both the seventh and the eighth, and Frongello tossed a shutout inning in between. Barron led off the seventh with a single to left and stole second and third before scoring on Freeman's sac fly, and the Wildcats cut Elon's lead to 8-3 as Cerbie's two-out double scored Gadaire (double).

Senior RHP Andy Bass worked around a walk and a hit batsman for a shutout eighth, and the 'Cats got a pair of base runners in the top of the ninth on consecutive two-out singles by Freeman and Brandt. Mitch Conner caught senior designated hitter Danny Weiss looking at strike three to end the threat and the game.

Davidson plays its final home game against Presbyterian Tuesday at 6 p.m., before taking the weekend off for finals.
