ELON, N.C. — The Elon Phoenix scored six runs in the first two innings en route to a 10-0 win over the Davidson Wildcats in the SoCon series opener Friday night at Latham Park.
Elon (28-17, 16-6) jumped on Davidson (18-23, 8-16) starter Chris Lamb (L, 1-6) early, using four hits for a pair of runs in the first and tacking on four more in the second, highlighted by a two-run home run by first baseman Grant McCoury (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI).
Lamb settled in, putting up zeroes in the third, fourth and fifth, but senior RHP Ken Ferrer (W, 5-3) allowed just four hits and struck out five in seven shutout innings. Elon finished with 13 hits, led by second baseman Sebastian Gomez (3-for-4, RBI), shortstop Neal Pritchard (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and McCoury.
Davidson had four hits, a pair from junior center fielder Seth Freeman (2-for-4), who led off the game with a base hit up the middle. Ferrer got ground balls from the next three Wildcats to leave him on the base paths.
In the home half, the Phoenix turned a leadoff infield single from designated hitter Jake Luce into a couple of runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning. Right fielder Niko Fraser's sac bunt attempt went right back to Lamb, who cut down Luce at second instead. Gomez followed with a single to right field, and Elon got its first run on Pritchard's RBI-single. With runners on the corners, the Phoenix used a double steal attempt for a run with Pritchard scoring from third after Gomez was caught trying to swipe second. Lamb fanned left fielder Cyle Rasmus to end the inning.
Sophomore third baseman Andrew Barna drew a leadoff walk in the top of the second, but Ferrer retired the next three with a pair of strikeouts and a ground ball, and the Phoenix tacked on four runs on three hits in the second to go ahead 6-0. Third baseman Garrett Koster took a leadoff walk and scored on McCoury's home run to left center, and the Phoenix also got runs on RBI-singles from Gomez and Pritchard.
The Wildcats got lone base runners in the next two innings, freshman catcher Daniel Gerow (1-for-2) in the third and Barna in the fourth, but couldn't convert either into a run. Lamb walked a pair in the third, as the Phoenix put runners on second and third with two outs, but coaxed a ground ball from Luce for the third out. Gomez laced a one-out triple down the right field line, but Davidson turned an inning-ending double play in the fourth for a second straight shutout inning.
Sophomore shortstop Michael Zeblo gave the Wildcats a base runner with a leadoff walk in the fifth, but the Phoenix erased him with a double play. McCoury almost pulled off a spectacular catch on Freeman's single to left but instead relayed to Gomez at second to catch him rounding first. Lamb faced the minimum in the fifth before giving way to sophomore RHP Michael Goldberg for the sixth. Luce took a one-out walk, but Davidson turned its second inning-ending double play.
The Wildcats put runners on the corners on infield singles by junior second baseman James Cerbie (1-for-2) and Gerow, but Ferrer got Freeman to fly out and keep the 'Cats off the scoreboard in the seventh, and Elon put up a second four-spot on a pair of hits and two errors in the seventh for the 10-0 lead.
Brad MacHaffie walked junior right fielder Drew Gadaire with one out in the eighth but rallied with a pair of strikeouts. Coleman Barron, Mike Frongello and Matt Sliwiak combined for a shutout bottom of the eighth, but MacHaffie faced the minimum in the top of the ninth.
Elon and Davidson will continue the series tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. Senior RHP Ian Horkley (4-3, 3.91) will go for Davidson against Senior RHP Thomas Girdwood (2-4, 3.92).
