SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Davidson battled back from an early 4-0 deficit and forced extra innings, but Clark Wise's fourth and final hit plated the winning run in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Wofford Terriers to a 7-6 win and series victory Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field.
Wofford (16-20, 3-10 SoCon) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead behind four hits and an error in the first inning. After the first two reached on an error and a bunt single, Konstantine Diamaduros (single) and Josh McKinney (groundout) drove in a run. Senior RHP Ian Horkley, who allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits and struck out two in five innings for Davidson (16-18, 8-11 SoCon), struck out David Roney for the second out, but Landon Bennett made it 4-0 with a two-RBI single to center field.
Davidson battled back behind a pair of two-run home runs by junior second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) and sophomore third baseman Andrew Barna (1-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) before tying the game with two runs in the eighth on two runs and an error. But John Cornely (W, 2-1) struck out five and allowed just one hit over the final 2 1/3 to earn the win, a day after earning the save.
Davidson cut the lead in half, 4-2, in the top of the fourth on Sigelbaum's two-out, two-run home run that also scored sophomore shortstop Michael Zeblo (1-for-4), who doubled down the right field line in the previous at-bat.
After the first-inning jam, Horkley worked four shutout innings until, on a blustery day, David Roney led off the sixth with a triple into the gap in left to bring out senior RHP Mike Frongello. Barna looked Roney back to third and threw out Landon Bennett for the first out, but the Terriers tacked on another run on a Matt Moore RBI-single in the next at-bat. Frongello got a double-play ball from pinch hitter Taylor Rozier to limit the damage, and Barna's two-run home run in the top of the seventh cut the lead to just a run, 5-4. Junior first baseman Drew Gadaire (1-for-4, RBI) drew a leadoff walk and also scored on the play.
Wofford got one back in the bottom half when Wise slapped a one-out base hit to left and moved to second on a passed ball. After an intentional pass to Mac Doyle, Diamaduros plated him on an RBI-single on the first pitch from senior RHP Andy Bass (L, 2-1), who fanned his next two batters to keep it, 6-4.
Davidson knotted the game up with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, as pinch hitter #J.P. Craven# (1-for-1) hit a one-out single and pinch runner James Cerbie scored when Brandt reached safely on throwing error by third baseman Josh McKinney. Cornely took the mound for Wofford, and Gadaire promptly plated freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt (1-for-6) with a base hit to the right side to tie the game at 6-6.
But it was all the success the Wildcats would have against Cornley, as Davidson went one-two-three in the top of the ninth. Bass needed some magic to keep the Terriers off the board in the bottom half, getting a bases-loaded, looking strikeout from freshman Josh Hyman, who came in to pinch run in the eighth, to send the game into extras. Wise led off with a walk and bumped over a base on a groundout, and the Wildcats intentionally walked the hot Diamaduros and then McKinney to get to Hyman, a gamble that paid off as Bass sat the rookie on strikes.
After Cornely struck out the side in the top of the 10th, the Wildcats ran out of luck in the bottom of the inning as Moore reached second on a ball hit to Brandt that he seemed to have caught and then dropped during a collision in the outfield that forced him from the game. Moore moved a base closer to home as Bass went to third unsuccessfully on a sacrifice bunt attempt and then scored the winning run when Wise's pop up dropped in no-man's land in shallow right field.
Davidson tallied 10 hits, led by senior designated hitter Danny Weiss (2-for-4) and Sigelbaum, who each had a pair. Wofford finished with 13 hits, led by Wise, who batted 4-for-5 with an RBI. Diamaduros, Roney and Bennett each had two.
Davidson and Wofford will play the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m.
