Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Cash Collins held the Wildcats to a pair of runs on five hits, and Wofford took advantage of three Davidson errors to win the opening game of the SoCon series, 3-2, Friday night at Russell C. King Field.

After Wofford (15-20, 3-10 SoCon) scratched an unearned run in the fourth inning, Davidson (16-17, 8-10 SoCon) knotted it up with a run of its own in the top of the sixth. But the Terriers took the lead for good with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to win the first game of the three-game set.

Junior center fielder Seth Freeman (1-for-2) singled to center field to start the game, stole second and got all the way to third with two outs in the first inning, but Collins (W, 6-1) got a fly out to leave him there. After Freeman's leadoff single in the first, Collins retired eight straight before Freeman drew a two-out walk in the third. But the Terrier pitched used one of his seven strikeouts on the night to strand him again, and Wofford would scratch an unearned run in the fourth as Alex Lee's two-out single scored Taylor Rozier, who reached safely on a Wildcat fielding error.

To that point, junior LHP Chris Lamb (L, 1-5) had allowed just a lone base runner in both the first and second, a two-out walk to Mac Doyle and a leadoff single by Josh McKinney, respectively. Lamb, who scattered seven hits through 6 1/3 innings for three unearned runs and struck out four, got a pop up from Lee to strand a pair in the fourth, and used a pickoff and a strikeout to neutralize a one-out single by Clark Wise in the fifth.

The Wildcats knotted the score in the top of the sixth, as Freeman continued his productive evening at the plate by taking a one-out free pass and scoring when freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt (1-for-4) and junior first baseman Drew Gadaire (1-for-4, RBI) put together back-to-back singles.

But the Terriers took advantage of Wildcat miscues for two more unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to reclaim a 3-1 lead. Konstantine Diamaduros led off with an infield single to second base and moved around to third as Lamb got two outs with a foul out and ground out, before scoring the tying run when David Roney reached safely on the Wildcats' second fielding error. After Wofford loaded the bases on a base hit and a hit batsman, Roney scored the winning run on an infield single by James Foster. Zeblo flipped to junior second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum on Wise's fielder's choice for the final out, leaving the bases loaded.

Davidson got a run back in the top of the seventh as Zeblo drove a two-out double down the left field line and scored when pinch hitter #J.P. Craven# (1-for-1, RBI) smacked a two-out single to left field to cut the lead to a run, 3-2. But it was all the Wildcat offense would get as Collins got Freeman to foul out to end the seventh, and John Cornely (S, 6) gave up just a pair of walks for no runs over the final two innings to earn the save.

Davidson finished with five hits, and Wofford tallied seven, led by Diamaduros (2-for-4) and Matt Moore (2-for-4, RBI).

The Wildcats and Terriers will play game two of the series tomorrow at 3 p.m.
