STANFORD, Calif. – Davidson senior Christine Rua scored twice in the first half, but No. 6 Stanford scored five unanswered goals to defeat the Wildcats in the NorPac Championship Semifinals, 7-2, Friday afternoon at Stanford University's Varsity Turf Field. Davidson will play the loser of the Longwood vs. California match in the third place game Saturday at 11 a.m. PT (2 p.m. ET).

Rua gave Davidson (11-8, 4-2 NorPac) a 1-0 lead 52 seconds into the game and, following a pair of Stanford (17-2, 6-0 NorPac) goals, tied the game at 2-2 in the 19th minute. The Cardinal then scored three goals before the halftime break and added two more in the second half for the final 7-2 margin.

"We came out hard, and not only was I excited that we scored first, but that we also answered back after Stanford's second goal," said head coach Ginny Turner. "We definitely lost our momentum when they got two more quick goals on us. I was proud of the effort we put into the game all the way to the last minute."

Alex McCawley and Stephanie Byrne led Stanford with two goals and an assist each.

Senior Meg Jarrell earned the assist on Rua's first goal, running down the left side and slipping the ball to Rua, who was able to knock it into the back of cage for the early lead. NorPac West Co-Player and Defensive Player of the Year Becky Dru tied the game in the fifth minute off a penalty corner with Hope Burke and Byrne earning the assists. Emily Henriksson put Stanford on top 2-1 in the 13th minute, but Rua knotted the game at 2-2 in the 19th minute with by deflecting a shot by junior Finley Amato following a penalty corner.

The assist was Amato's ninth of the season, giving her the Davidson single-season record in the category. It was also her 37th point of the season, ranking her second in single-season scoring at Davidson only to her 2010 season when she scored 39 points.

McCawley scored in the 29th minute and Byrne scored goals in the 30th and 32nd minutes to give Stanford a commanding 5-2 lead at the halftime break. McCawley assisted on Byrne's first goal, while Courtney Haldeman assisted on the second.

McCawley notched her second goal of the game in the 40th minute with Devon Holman earning the helper. Haldeman tallied the game's final goal in the 51st minute.

"Stanford is a good team who are fast and connect well," said Turner. "We had a difficult time staying with them defensively and it led to thier goals. Of course we are all very disappointed with the loss and the score. I think we are a much better team then that score reflects."

Junior goalkeeper Sarah Fisher made five saves for Davidson, while Ale Moss made two stops for Stanford. 'Cats sophomore Brooke Osborne was credited with a defensive save.

"I am happy we have one more opportunity to play tomorrow and the chance to end the season with a win," said Turner. "Our seniors deserve one more game and hopefully we can earn the win for them.

"I have been so thankful for all the support we have had from east to west coast. We have a great group of family, friends and alums who have made the trip out here and it is so special to hear them cheering us on and waiting to greet us when we get off the field. I really appreciate all they have done for us out here in California."
