STANFORD, Calif. – In one of the most intense games of the 2011 NorPac Field Hockey Championship tournament, Longwood ultimately bested Davidson, 1-0, in double overtime in the third-place game Saturday afternoon at Stanford University's Varsity Turf Field.

Stacey de Grandhomme scored the game-winner for Longwood (13-9, 4-2 NorPac) in the 89th minute, just over four minutes into the second overtime. Rachel Akers earned the assist on de Grandhomme's quick strike following a penalty corner.

Longwood outshot Davidson (11-9, 4-2 NorPac) in the first half, 18-3, but junior goalkeeper Sarah Fisher made nine saves for the 'Cats and senior Hannah Lawrence made two defensive saves to keep Longwood off the board. Davidson outshot the Lancers 15-8 after the first half.

"I'm really proud of the heart and effort we put into the game today," said Davidson head coch Ginny Turner. "We really picked up our intensity in the second half and we played really well in OT. We had a lot of opportunities in front of the cage and the Longwood goalkeeper made some great saves."

Fisher made three saves over the remainder of the game to finish with a career-high 12 saves.

"Fisher has an excellent game and really held our defense together," said Turner.

The 'Cats' best chance to win came in the first overtime in the 80th minute when they earned a penalty stroke, but Longwood goalkeeper Amy Lewis made the save. Lewis made nine saves after entering the game at the start of the second half. Kaye Goulding earned the start and made two saves in the first half.

Freshman Sara French had a scoring opportunity for the 'Cats in the 62nd minute, but Charlotte De Waegeneer made a defensive save. Senior Rua and juniors Annie Evans and Finley Amato led the 'Cats offensively with three shots each.

The game pitted the top two teams in the NorPac East Division, as Longwood earned the regular season crown and Davidson was second.

Head coach Ginny Turner guided the Wildcats to their second straight winning season in 2011, a first for the program as members of the NorPac, which they joined in 2000. Davidson lose eight seniors to graduation.

"All of the seniors have been an incredible part of this program for four years," said Turner. "They have been key in our recent success. We accomplished a lot this season and this team deserves a lot of credit for their commitment and hard work."

Senior defender Steph Meador represented Davidson on the NorPac All-Tournament team for a second consecutive season. No. 16 California defeated No. 6 Stanford for the NorPac Championship.
