DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Christine Rua's goal in the 34th minute proved to be the difference as Davidson field hockey fended off late pressure by Radford to earn a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.

The Wildcats finish the regular season with a 10-7 overall record and a 4-2 NorPac East mark to earn the No. 2 seed. The 'Cats will play either UC Davis or Pacific in the first round of the NorPac Tournament Thursday.

“I'm ecstatic to earn this NorPac win,” said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. “It is a great way to honor our seniors and they stepped up today and played well.”

Radford finishes the season at 7-11 overall, 2-4 NorPac to claim the East Division's third seed.

All of the scoring took place in the first half. Radford scored the first goal before Davidson tallied the next two, both assisted by junior Finley Amato.

On Radford's first penalty corner of the game and lone shot of the half, Melissa Register deflected a shot by Marlee Schramm into the cage in the third minute.

Junior Annie Evans scored the 'Cats first goal in the 18th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Amato crossed the ball from the right to Evans in front, who knocked it into the back of the cage.

The 'Cats controlled possession for much of the half, outshooting the Highlanders 10-1, and Rua notched the game-winner just before halftime. Amato blasted the ball from the top of the circle on a corner attempt, and Rua redirected it past Radford goalkeeper Sidney Encarnacion for the goal.

Radford outshot Davidson 6-3 in the second half, but junior goalkeeper Sarah Fisher made three saves, two of which were in the final minute. Radford earned a penalty corner in the final 30 seconds of the game, but Fisher made a big save on a shot by Schramm to preserve the lead.

“We had a beautiful passing game and I would've liked to see us score more goals, but I think we did a good job putting pressure on them,” said Turner. “We are where we need to be to be ready for the NorPac tournament.”

Encarnacion finished with one save for Radford, as the 'Cats held a 13-7 advantage in shots for the game, while corners were even at six. Alayna Versage recorded a defensive save in the first half for Radford when she prevented a slow roller off the stick of senior Meg Jarrell from crossing the line.

Notes:
Amato now has 15 assists to rank third all-time at Davidson in the category … her seven assists this season matches her career-high set last season and is one shy of the Davidson single-season record … Amato is three goals (six points) shy of matching her 2010 season … Rua and Amato lead the team with three game-winning goals each.
