DAVIDSON, N.C. – Hannah English, Annie Evans and Finley Amato combined for six unanswered goals in the first half for Davidson to lead the Wildcats to an 8-3 victory over Appalachian State in NorPac field hockey action Wednesday night at Belk Turf Field.
Amato added a goal in the second half for her first-career hat trick. The three goals vaulted the junior into third all-time in career scoring at Davidson with 79 points and into a tie for fourth all-time (Holly Kledis, 1992-95) in career goals at Davidson with 33 total.
“A game like this was exactly what we needed heading in to the final game of the season and the NorPac tournament,” said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. “I'm very excited for Finley getting her first career hat trick, and I am very pleased at how well we executed our corners tonight.”
The eight-goal output was a new Davidson (9-7, 3-2 NorPac) team record for a NorPac match. The old record was six goals, set twice last season against Longwood and Appalachian State.
English and Evans both finished the game with two goals and an assist. Senior Christine Rua assisted on three of the first half goals, while senior Gray Robinson assisted on two. Freshman Kristy Helscel scored her first-career goal, while classmate Julia Guthrie tallied an assist.
Appalachian State (2-15, 1-4 NorPac) scored the game's first goal and added two goals in the second half by Jessi Stuart.
ASU started the game off strong, earning an early penalty corner and scoring in the second minute. Kelly Allaband and Lauren Kloeppinger earned the assists on Hannah Martin's direct-corner goal, which was blasted from the top of the circle and bounced over Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Fisher.
The lead was short-lived though as Davidson scored the next six goals. English scored her first goal of the season on a perfectly executed penalty corner in the fourth minute. Evans started the play and Robinson stopped the ball for Amato, who made a short pass forward to Rua. Rua one-touched the ball back to English at the top of the circle, and English blasted it into the back of the cage.
The 'Cats took a 2-1 lead just over a minute later as Rua found Evans in front of the cage for a goal. Evans scored the next goal in the ninth minute for a 3-1 advantage, sending a rocket from the top-right side of the circle into the back-left corner of the cage.
Amato extended the lead to 4-1 in the 15th minute. In a scramble in front of the net, Rua passed the ball across the front of the cage to Amato, who tipped it inside the right post. English made it a 5-1 game in the 19th minute, scoring off a direct corner with Robinson and Evans earning the assists.
Amato capped the scoring run in the 30th minute with a direct corner goal assisted by Robinson and Guthrie.
The teams traded goals in the second half for the final 8-3 margin. Stuart poked the ball across the goal line in a scramble in front of the cage in the 42nd minute to make it a 6-2 game. Amato scored a similar goal at the other end in the 48th minute. Stuart struck again in the 58th minute.
Helscel notched the game's final goal in the 67th minute, knocking the ball into the back of the cage from right in front after English sent a pass all the way from the right corner of the field.
“I thought everyone we substituted into the game did a great job continuing to execute our game plan and keeping up our momentum,” said Turner. “I hope we can have a repeat of this performance Saturday.”
Both starting goalkeepers were relieved in the first half. Bridgette Street played the first 21 minutes, 35 seconds for Appalachian State, allowing the first five goals and making one save. Sarah Anderson played the final 48:25, allowing the final three goals and making three saves. Anna Long and Hannah Martin both recorded defensive saves.
Junior goalkeeper Sarah Fisher made three saves, allowing only the first goal in 26:19 of action. Sophomore Carolyn Macek played the final 43:41 and made three saves with two goals allowed.
Davidson will conclude the regular season at Belk Turf Field Saturday at 1 p.m. against Radford. The 'Cats will honor their seniors before the game.
Notes: Finley Amato leads the team and NorPac East Division with 31 points (13 goals, 5 assists) and is eight points shy of her Davidson single-season record of 39 points (2010) … Christine Rua now has 22 points (8 goals, 6 assists), just shy of her career-high 24 set last season … Rua's three assists in a game and six assists in a season are both career highs, as she had just two in all of 2010 … the five-point performances by Annie Evans and Hannah English were career bests for both.
