No. 7 Wake Forest Edges Davidson Field Hockey, 5-3

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson held an early lead and made it a one-goal game late, but No. 7 Wake Forest's strong play on penalty corners allowed them to take a 5-3 win in non-conference field hockey action Friday night at Belk Turf Field.

Wake Forest had five different goal scorers: Kaitlin Piosa, Liza Casella Kari Walkley, Lauren Greenwald and Jess McFadyen. Walkley and Greenwald also tallied assists.

Senior Clare Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.), senior Ellie Szykowny (Columbus, Ohio) and junior Christine Rua (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored Davidson's three goals.

“I'm very proud of the team's effort tonight,” said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. “They played hard against very talented and skilled team. Wake Forest did a very good job on their corners; otherwise it was a fairly even game and one of our better games of the year. I told the team that we can only get better from here.”

Wake Forest scored three goals over the last 15 minutes of the first half to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead. The Demon Deacons got on the scoreboard first as Kaitlin Piosa deflected a shot by Emily Cummings off a penalty corner in the eighth minute, but Davidson took the lead with two goals within forty seconds in the 14th and 15th minutes.

Perry scored the equalizer on a penalty corner shot from the top of the circle with both Evans and junior Gray Robinson (Louisville, Ky.) earning assists. The 'Cats immediately jumped back on the attack. From the top of the circle sophomore Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) found Szykowny next to the left post and she tipped it in to put the Wildcats up 2-1.

Wake Forest took control late in the first half, though. Lauren Greenwald and Faith Adams earned the assists on a penalty corner tally by Casella in the 21st minute. Six minutes later, Kerry Ergen fed a ball across to Kari Walkley, who put it in the back of the cage to put the Demon Deacons back on top. Greenwald extended the lead off a penalty corner with just under two minutes remaining in the half, with Walkley credited with the helper.

The second half was scoreless until Rua scored with just under 10 minutes remaining. Wake Forest restored their two-goal cushion though, earning a 2-on-0 breakaway on their ensuing possession. Walkey's initial attempt rebounded off sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) to Jess McFayden who knocked it in to ice the win.

Fisher and her counterpart, Kaitlyn Ruhf, each recorded four saves. Wake Forest held a 19-13 advantage in shots and a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Davidson will open its NorPac schedule on the road Wednesday, as they will travel to Radford. The Wildcats will then play back-to-back home matches, taking on Richmond, Saturday, Sept. 25 at 12 p.m. and Georgetown, Sunday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.

Notes: Amato leads the team in scoring with 15 points (6g, 3a) … with 26 goals in seven games, the 'Cats are on pace to break their single-season scoring record (52) … Robinson has tallied a point in each of the last five games.
