Field Hockey Defeats St. Francis For Second Straight 5-0 Win

8/28/2010 3:48:55 PM | Field Hockey

WASHINGTON –
Jennie Mostellar and Finley Amato each scored twice as Davidson used four second half goals to power past St. Francis (Pa.) and earn their second 5-0 shutout victory in as many days at the Georgetown Field Hockey Invitational at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex on the campus of American University.

Mostellar, a senior from New Bern, N.C., scored the Wildcats' (2-0) first two goals with freshman Brooke Osborne (Fort Worth, Texas) earning her first career assists on both. Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) tallied two unassisted goals within a span of 1:35 early in the second half before junior Christine Rua (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored for the final 5-0 margin.

Davidson opened the 2010 season with a 5-0 win over Bryant the day before.

“It was a great weekend of wins for us,” said head coach Ginny Sutton Turner. “The experience of playing back-to-back games will help us next weekend and later in the season, and everyone was able to get some playing time and build their confidence.”

The Wildcat defense remained stingy, allowing just four St. Francis (0-1) shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredricksburg, Va.) made two saves before freshman Carolyn Macek, making her collegiate debut, relieved her for the final minutes of the game.

“Sarah was awesome for us in the cage and Steph Meador played an amazing game defensively for us,” said Turner.

The 'Cats failed to convert early, taking 11 shots before Mostellar broke the deadlock late in the first half, finding the ball in a scramble in front of the cage and putting it home for a 1-0 lead.

Davidson put the game out of reach early in the second half. Osborne played the ball into the circle for Mostellar, who swept it in just 5:34 into the second frame.

Amato gave the 'Cats a 3-0 advantage less than five minutes later at 45:01 before striking again from the top of the scoring circle at 46:36. On her second goal, Amato carried the ball across the top of the circle and fired a shot into the opposite corner of the cage for the goal.

Sophomore Annie Evans (Lake Forest, Ill.) crossed the ball to Rua for the final score of the game at 54:21.

Davidson finished with a 23-4 advantage in shots and a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners. Bryant goalkeeper Katelyn Vitali made eight saves on 13 shots on goal.

The Wildcats will open their home slate Saturday against Towson, beginning at 12 p.m. at Belk Turf Field.

Notes: Mostellar (4g, 1a) and Amato (3g, 1a) are Davidson's scoring leaders through two games with nine and seven points, respectively … in 2009, Mostellar scored 14 points, while Amato scored nine during her rookie campaign … the Wildcats had not opened a season with a pair of shutout wins since 2001 when they defeated Longwood (4-0) and American (1-0).
