Field Hockey Set for Home Opener Against Towson

DAVIDSON, N.C. –
After opening the 2010 season on the road with a pair of 5-0 victories, the Davidson field hockey team returns to Belk Turf Field to face Towson in their home opener Saturday at 12 p.m.

For the second weekend in a row, the 'Cats will play games on back-to-back days. Sunday, Davidson will travel to Wake Forest to face Lafayette at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Wildcats: For the first time since 2001, Davidson opened the season with a pair of shutouts, defeating both Bryant and Sacred Heart by 5-0 scores at the Georgetown Invitational last weekend. In fact, the 'Cats scored more goals (10) than allowed shot attempts (7). Senior Jennie Mostellar earned NorPac East Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring four goals and an assist Dating back to last season, Mostellar has scored eight goals and three assists for 19 points in the last six games. Sophomore Finley Amato is second only to Mostellar in scoring in the entire NorPac conference, tallying three goals and an assist over the weekend. Junior Christine Rua also notched a pair of goals and senior Clare Perry tallied one.

Scouting the Tigers: Towson is just one game into their 2010 season, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Richmond. Kathleen Morris scored the lone for Towson, which yielded two second half goals for the defeat. Towson, a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) finished with a 6-12 record in 2009. The Tigers are playing four NorPac teams in 2010, heading to Appalachian State Sunday and hosting Radford and Pacific later in the season. Towson had three NorPac matches in 2009, suffering a 1-0 loss to California, but earning wins over Pacific (3-2) and Appalachian State (3-0).

The Series: After winning their first meeting in 1993, 1-0, Davidson has gone 0-3 against Towson. The Tigers prevailed 3-0 in their last meeting in 2008.

Up Next: The Wildcats will meet Lafayette in a neutral site match at Wake Forest Sunday. The Leopards are opening their 2010 season Saturday against No. 6 Wake Forest. The Patriot League team finished 2009 at 14-6, and returns six of their starters. Davidson will not return to Belk Turf Field until Sept. 17 when Wake Forest makes the short trip south for a 6 p.m. match. In between, the 'Cats will play two games in Williamsburg, Va. They will challenge the hosts, William & Mary, Friday and Ivy League foe Penn on Sunday.
