DAVIDSON, N.C. – Enjoying their best season in NorPac play, the East Division Champion Davidson field hockey team will look to reach the NorPac Championship game for the first time in program history when they take on the No. 2 seed from the West Division, California, Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Belk Turf Field.
Davidson (14-6) advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 win over No. 4 West seed Pacific, while California (9-8) advanced after defeating the East's third seed, Radford, 3-2.
The Wildcats have twice reached the NorPac semifinals, doing so in 2000 and 2007, only to be thwarted by the Golden Bears both times. Cal took a 4-3 win in 2000 and a 5-0 win in 2007, and has won all 11 meetings between the teams.
Davidson has reason to be optimistic that the third time will be the charm, though. The 'Cats gave Cal a first-round scare in last season's tournament as then-freshman Annie Evans gave third-seed Davidson a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute before second-seeded California forced overtime and scored in the 13th minute of the extra frame to steal a 2-1 win. Davidson and Cal faired the same against their most recent common opponent, Radford. The 'Cats guaranteed themselves at least a share of the division crown with a 3-2 win over the Highlanders last week, while Cal won by the same score this evening.
Cal had two players named to the All-NorPac West team: midfielder Megan Psyllos and defender Lisa Lohre. Psyllos has seven goals and three assists for 17 points this season.
NorPac Coach of the Year Ginny Turner will look to NorPac East Player and Offensive Player of the Year Finley Amato to lead the 'Cats attack along with All-NorPac East forward Jennie Mostellar and midfielder Clare Perry. The 'Cats also boast an all-conference defender in Steph Meador.
