Davidson Claims NorPac East Crown; Stanford and California Share West Title
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson and Stanford will enter the three-day NorPac Field Hockey Conference tournament as the top seeds when action gets underway Thursday at Davidson College's Belk Turf Field. The Wildcats will play fourth-seeded Pacific in the tournament's third game of the day at 4 p.m.
Davidson won its first outright regular season NorPac divisional crown, while Stanford and California shared the west title. All three teams finished 5-1 in their respective divisions.
While it's the second division title for Davidson (they last shared the crown with Appalachian State in 2003), Stanford won its second straight and earned the top seed as the Cardinal's 5-4 aggregate score broke the tie between the co-division champions. For the second-seeded Bears, it was their 11th regular season championship in the last 12 seasons.
The final two seeds in the west will be the third-seeded UC Davis Aggies (2-4) and fourth-seeded Pacific Tigers (0-6).
In the east, Longwood finished as the two seed for the second straight season, Radford third (2-4) and Appalachian State (1-5) fourth.
The NorPac Championships will be held at Davidson's Belk Turf Field and begin Thursday, Nov. 4 with four interdivisional first round games and conclude with the championship game at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6.
The No. 2 seed in the East, Longwood, and the No. 3 seed in the West, UC Davis, kick the tournament off at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, followed by the West Division co-champion and top-seeded Stanford versus No. 4 in the East, Appalachian State at 1:30 p.m.
At 4:00 p.m., East Division champion Davidson takes on the fourth-seeded west squad, Pacific. Capping off the first day of competition is the No. 2 seed in the West and co-champion, California, and the East's three seed, Radford. Those two squads collide at 6:30 p.m.
The winners of those games will play semifinals matches at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00. Those contests are sandwiched between a pair consolation matches at 11 a.m. and 6:30 pm.
The championship match is at 1:30 pm, which will be preceded by the third place game at 11 a.m.
The winner of the championship game will head to the winner of the Atlantic-10 Conference in a NCAA play-in game on Tuesday, Nov. 9.
Sophomore Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.), Davidson's active career leader in scoring, will look to continue to lead the 'Cats' attack. She has led the NorPac in scoring since the third week of the season and finished the regular season with 15 goals and five assists for 35 points, just one-point shy of the school single-season record. Senior Jennie Mostellar (New Bern, N.C.) has also been among the conference leaders in scoring, recording nine goals and seven assists for 25 points. Classmate Clare Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.) has been a valuable part of Davidson's midfield, while junior Steph Meador (Hummelstown, Pa.) has been the top defender. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) has recorded four shutouts in her first season as the starter.
Pacific went 2-14 during the regular season, dropping all six NorPac West games. Kelly Perkins and Jenna Vivian lead the Tigers with five goals and two assists apiece. Ashlee Schlesier has seen the majority of the action in goal and has a .719 save percentage.
