Field Hockey Claims NorPac East Division Title with 6-1 Win Over App. State

10/31/2010 5:20:00 PM | Field Hockey

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team secured the NorPac East Division title in their regular season finale with a five-goal outburst in the second half to defeat Appalachian State, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Belk Turf Field. As the No. 1 seed, Davidson will face the No. 4 seed from the West Division, Pacific, on their home turf at 4 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the NorPac Conference Tournament.

Davidson College is serving as the host venue for the entire tournament, which will feature games Thursday-Saturday.

The NorPac division title is Davidson's first outright, as they tied with Appalachian State in 2003.

Davidson concludes the regular season with a 13-6 overall record and a program-best 5-1 conference record. The six-goal output tied a team record for most goals in a NorPac contest, set earlier in the month in a 6-4 win over Longwood. It was also more than enough to break the team's single-season scoring record, as the 'Cats have totaled 56 goals so far. The old record was 52, set in 1990 and matched in 2007.

Appalachian State finished the regular season at 5-12, 1-5 in the NorPac East. They will be the fourth seed from the East in the tournament, while Longwood (4-2) will be the No. 2 seed and Radford (2-4) No. 3.

Senior Jennie Mostellar (New Bern, N.C.) led the 'Cats attack on Senior Day, with two goals. Lake Forest, Ill. sophomores Finley Amato and Annie Evans both scored a goal and an assist each. Amato now has a team-and conference-leading 35 points and needs just one more point to equal the single-season points record.

After the game went to halftime tied at 1-1, the Wildcats took control in the second half, outshooting ASU 27-2. Just over two minutes in, Amato crossed the ball to Mostellar in front for the eventual game-winner. Amato put the 'Cats up 3-1 in the 51st minute and senior Clare Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.) extended the lead under five minutes later with a shot from the top that rocketed in just under the crossbar.

Junior Gray Robinson (Louisville, Ky.) and Mostellar scored the game's final two goals in the 65th and 70th minutes, respectively.

Davidson appeared to have the game in hand in the first half, as Evans scored off a rebound in the 15th minute, but the 'Cats could not get out of their defensive zone at the end of the half and Nicole Morgan scored for the Mountaineers with 39 seconds remaining. Kelsey Dorset was credited with the assist.

The Wildcats finished with a 35-6 advantage in shots as Appalachian State goalkeeper Bridgette Street made 17 saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) made three stops for Davidson.

The NorPac Championship Tournament will begin on Thursday, Nov. 4 at Davidson's Belk Turf Field with four interdivisional first round games and conclude with the championship game at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6.

In the West Division, Stanford and California shared the title. Stanford earned the top seed as the Cardinal's 5-4 aggregate score broke the tie between the co-division champions. For the second-seeded Bears, it was their 11th regular season championship in the last 12 seasons. The final two seeds in the west will be the third-seeded UC Davis Aggies (2-4) and fourth-seeded Pacific Tigers (0-6).

In the east, Longwood finished as the two seed for the second straight season, Radford third (2-4) and Appalachian State (1-5) fourth.

The winner of the championship game will head to the winner of the Atlantic-10 Conference in a NCAA play-in game on Tuesday, Nov. 9.
