Field Hockey to Conclude Regular Season with NorPac Contests Friday, Sunday

10/28/2010 12:53:26 PM | Field Hockey

DAVIDSON, N.C. –
The Davidson field hockey team will look to secure the NorPac East Division title at Belk Turf Field this weekend by earning wins over Radford Friday (7 p.m.) and Appalachian State Sunday (2 p.m.) in the final two games of the regular season. Davidson's four seniors will be honored prior to the contest Sunday against Appalachian State.

Jennie Mostellar, Clare Perry, Ellie Szykowny and Courtney Tobe will be recognized for their accomplishments throughout their four years at Davidson. Mostellar and Perry both earned All-NorPac honors as the 'Cats leading scorers in 2009, while Szykowny and Tobe have been valuable contributors to the 'Cats attack during their careers.

Fans that are unable to make it out to the field can follow all the action via live stats, which can be found here.

Scouting the Wildcats: Davidson remains on top of the NorPac East division at 3-1 (11-6 overall), but Longwood is still in contention for the top spot after the 'Cats fell to the Lancers on the road Saturday, 3-1. Davidson's magic number to clinch is two as a pair of wins, or one win and a Longwood loss to Appalachian State Saturday, will give the 'Cats their first outright NorPac division championship. Longwood is currently 3-2 and defeated Appalachian State on the road, 4-2, earlier this season. Davidson tied Appalachian State for the 2003 East title, but was awarded the No. 1 seed in the NorPac tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker. Finley Amato remains as the overall NorPac scoring leader with 12 goals and four assists for 28 points. Mostellar is second on the team and fourth in the conference with seven goals and six assists for 20 points. Christine Rua (19 points) and Gray Robinson (18) also rank in the conference's top 10. Goalkeeper Sarah Fisher has a .731 save percentage and 2.00 goals against average.

Scouting the Highlanders: Radford enters with a 2-3 NorPac mark and is 8-8 overall. Radford started the season 6-1 and was receiving votes in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Top-20 Coaches Poll, but has since gone 2-7. Their conference wins came at Longwood and at home versus Appalachian State. Three of their non-conference losses came to nationally-ranked teams in No. 12 Louisville, No. 13 Wake Forest and No. 3 Virginia. The match at Wake was the closest at 4-3. Kay Tufts leads the Highlanders in scoring with eight goals and two assists for 18 points. In goal, Jen Wisniewski has a .693 save percentage and 5.50 goals against average.

Scouting the Mountaineers:
Appalachian State is 1-3 in conference and 5-10 overall. Their lone conference win came at home against Radford, but App has dropped their last five games since. App. State's performance could determine the division champion as they will be playing back-to-back NorPac road games this weekend. They will be at Longwood Saturday before heading back south to Davidson Sunday. Lisa Charney leads the team in scoring with seven goals and one assist for 15 points. Bridgette Street leads the league with 112 saves for a .732 save percentage and 2.99 goals against average. Street and Davidson's Fisher have each won the NorPac East Defensive Player of the Week award three times this season.

The Series: Davidson defeated both teams 1-0 on the road earlier this season. The 'Cats are now 10-25-2 all-time against Radford and 34-28-2 against Appalachian State. The win over Radford was Davidson's first since 2008 after the Highlanders swept the 'Cats in two games last season. The Wildcats and Mountaineers split their two matches in 2009.

Up Next: Davidson will host the 2010 NorPac Conference Tournament, Thursday-Saturday, November 4-6.
