FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood prevented Davidson from clinching the division title early as Lauren van de Kamp scored a pair of penalty stroke goals to lead the Lancers past the Wildcats, 3-1, in NorPac field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Longwood's Athletics Complex.
Davidson (11-6, 3-1 NorPac East) is still in control of the East division and can win it outright if they win their final two regular season home contests against Radford and Appalachian State. Longwood (5-12) is second in the standings with a 3-2 conference record with one game remaining against Appalachian State.
The Wildcats increased their offensive pressure in the second half, but Longwood goalkeeper Kaye Goulding finished with seven saves to hold the 'Cats to just the one goal. Davidson outshot Longwood 11-7 for the game, holding a 6-1 advantage in the second half. The Wildcats held an even larger advantage in penalty corners, taking 11 to Longwood's three for the game after holding an 8-1 advantage in the second half.
Sophomore Annie Evans (Lake Forest, Ill.) gave Davidson an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute with a breakaway goal, but Stacy de Grandhomme found the back of the cage with a hard shot from the top of the circle, with Kimberly Sullivan earning the assist, to even the game at 1-1 in the 14th minute.
Longwood went ahead for good 2:26 later when they received a penalty stroke during a penalty corner attempt, and van de Kamp converted the opportunity for a 2-1 Lancer lead. The score remained the same until the final minutes when Longwood received another penalty stroke on a penalty corner. van de Kamp was successful again, adding an insurance goal with less than four minutes remaining.
"We came out extra strong in the second half but just could not score," said head coach Ginny Turner. "We had plenty of corners and couldn't convert. We have a week to make adjustments there though and get ready for Radford and App. State."
Junior Hannah English (Louisville, Ky.) led Davidson with four shots, all on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) made two saves.
Davidson will return to Belk Turf Field for their final two games of the regular season. They will host Radford Friday night at 7 p.m. before taking on Appalachian State Sunday, October 31 at 2 p.m. The Wildcats defeated both teams on the road by 1-0 margins earlier in the season.
Davidson will then host the NorPac tournament November 4-6.
Note: The 'Cats have scored 47 goals this season, and need five more to equal the single-season school record of 52.
