DAVIDSON, N.C. – Virginia Commonwealth scored twice in the second half to maintain their one-goal lead and defeat Davidson field hockey, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.
Seniors Clare Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Jennie Mostellar (New Bern, N.C.) both scored for Davidson (10-5, 2-0 NorPac) in the second half, but VCU (11-4, 4-1 CAA) answered with two goals following Perry's score to take a 3-1 lead, and the 'Cats were unable even the game after Mostellar brought the 'Cats back within one in the 65th minute.
Kelsey Scherrer scored off a direct corner, assisted by Flore van Dessel and Stephanie DeMasi, to give VCU a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute, and Melanie Marotta notched the eventual game-winner just over four minutes later, deflecting in a shot from Scherrer just inside the right post.
"We're disappointed with the loss, but I am proud of how hard we played today," said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. "VCU is a very good team, and we took some good shots and Sarah Fisher made some great saves."
VCU held a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the first half Arialle Hess was open in front of the cage for the Rams, and Chelsea Hill found her with a pass from the right corner of the field for the game's first goal in the 17th minute.
The Wildcats came out stronger in the second half, tying the game at 1-1 early. Just over six minutes in, Davidson offensive pressure resulted in a penalty corner attempt, and after a couple passes at the top of the circle, junior Hannah English (Louisville, Ky.) found Perry, who blasted a shot from the top of the circle that found it's way through VCU goalkeeper Megan Botteri and trickled over the goal line.
VCU answered with a pair of goals, but Mostellar pulled the 'Cats back within one late, finding the back of the cage from right in front at 64:12.
The Rams managed to fend off the 'Cats in the remaining minutes to take the win, though. Shots finished even in the second half at six, with VCU holding a 12-10 advantage for the game. The Wildcats led in penalty corners for the game, 8-6.
Scherrer led VCU with five shots, while Mostellar and Perry led Davidson with three each.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) made four challenging saves for Davidson, while a pair of goalkeepers split time for VCU. Erin Jablonski started and made one save in the first half, while Botteri made two in the second half and allowed both goals.
Davidson will wrap up the regular season with four crucial NorPac Conference games. They will hit the road to face Appalachian State Thursday and Longwood Saturday. They will return home for a Friday, October 29 match at 7 p.m. against Radford and a Sunday, Oct. 31 match against Appalachian State at 2 p.m.
Notes: VCU ranks just outside the Top 20 in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll ... Mostellar has now scored in back-to-back games … English has seven assists on the year and just needs one more assist to tie the single-season school record (eight) … the 'Cats have scored 45 goals this season, and need seven more to equal the single-season school record.
