10/21/2010 9:39:52 PM | Field Hockey

BOONE, N.C.Gray Robinson's goal on the game's first shot five minutes, one second in was all Davidson needed to earn a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State in NorPac field hockey action Tuesday night in Kidd Brewer Stadium.

The win ended Davidson's first losing streak of the season at three, improved the Wildcats' record to 11-5 overall and tightened their grip on the top spot in the NorPac East Division at 3-0. At 11 wins, Davidson has won their most games since the 1993 team won 12.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) only had to make two saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season as Davidson outshot Appalachian State (5-3, 1-3 NorPac East), 16-6. Bridgette Street made nine saves for the Mountaineers, while Casey Lammando made a pair of defensive saves and Jenn Heiss made one in a flurry to start the second half.

Robinson (Louisville, Ky.) found the back of the cage for her career-best sixth goal of the season with help from senior Jennie Mostellar (New Bern, N.C.), who is now second on the team in scoring with a career-best 20 points (7 goals, 6 assists). Mostellar crossed the to the middle where Robinson one-timed it past Street.

"It was a great conference win," said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. "We played very well despite the tough surface and had a lot of opportunities in front of the cage, but Street had a great game for them. It was a fantastic team effort tonight."

Sophomore Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) led Davidson in shots with five, all on goal, while Mostellar had four.

Davidson plays their final road game of the regular season at 12 p.m. on Saturday at conference-foe Longwood, whom Davidson defeated 6-4 at home earlier this season. The Wildcats will then host Radford at 7 p.m. Friday night before Appalachian State visits Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Davidson College will host the NorPac Conference Tournament November 4-6.

Notes: Davidson's three conference wins are their most since 2007 … the 'Cats fifth team shutout was their most since the 1999 team earned six ... the 'Cats have scored 46 goals this season, and need six more to equal the single-season school record of 52.
