DAVIDSON, N.C. — On the first day of September, the Davidson Wildcat field hockey team earned its first victory of the 2007 season with a 4-2 win over Christopher Newport at Belk Turf Field.
Other firsts included the first career win for interim head coach Ginny Sutton and the first collegiate goal for freshman forward Courtney Tobe, who scored the 'Cats fourth and final goal with under four minutes to play for added insurance.
Senior forward Kayli Maxwell scored back-to-back goals, in the eighth and 11th minutes, to get the 'Cats off to solid start. Juniors Lauren Calve and Britti Himelfarb were credited with assists on the scores, respectively.
Diana Golden put the Captains (0-1) on the board, connecting on a pass from Rhiannon Thomasson, with just a minute and half left to play in the first half.
Senior Eleanor Cowley got involved in the scoring action, pushing the Wildcats lead to 3-1, off Himelfarb's second assist of the game, but CNU added a score in the 56th minute to keep things interesting. Sophomore keeper Christa Goeke saved a shot, but Traylor put away the rebound to tighten the score to 3-2.
No matter, because Toby's first collegiate goal with 4:27 remaining proved the final margin, 4-2, for the Wildcat win.
The Wildcats outshot the Capatins 18-14 and had a 6-3 advantage on penalty corners. Goeke posted seven saves in 70 minutes, while Emma Stout went the distance for CMU with eight saves.
Davidson returns to action, hosting Mercyhurst tomorrow at Belk Turf field at 2 p.m.
