Perkins Punches 15 as 'Cats Blank Billikens

DAVIDSON — Davidson right-hander Wilson Perkins struck out a career-best 15 and the Wildcats notched their first shutout since 2022 in a 6-0 series-opening win over Saint Louis Friday evening at Wilson Field.
With Perkins leading the way, the Wildcats improved to 15-17 overall and 10-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, where they lead the standings. Saint Louis (17-16) fell to 6-7 in league play.
Perkins tossed eight innings and allowed only two hits: a single in the second inning and one in the fourth. He struck out the side in the sixth, punched out two batters in the first, second, fourth, fifth and eighth and struck out one in the third and seventh to finish two strikeouts shy of the Davidson single-game record. He nearly doubled his previous career-best of eight strikeouts, which he had against Penn State last year and at Fordham last weekend.
Perkins got run support in the second inning via Chris Schuchart's two-RBI double, and the Wildcats pushed the lead to 4-0 in the third off two hits, an error and a Michael O'Shaughnessy sacrifice fly. Cider Canon's elusive ground-ball single up the middle plated a run in the fifth, and a Schuchart sacrifice fly make it 6-0 in the eighth.
Canon finished with three hits, while Eli Putnam had two.
Ed Hall pitched a scoreless ninth and struck out two to secure the Wildcats' first shutout since May 13, 2022, when the Wildcats won at Saint Joseph's by the same 6-0 score behind a Blake Hely complete-game shutout.
Perkins threatened a Davidson record that was set nearly 117 years ago to the day and matched in the 1980s. Davidson's Clarence Clark struck out 17 at Wake Forest on April 14, 1908, and Greg Wilcox had 17 strikeouts at Charlotte on May 8, 1988.
