'Cats Start Fast; Draw With UNCG

DAVIDSON – The Davidson College men's soccer team played the UNC Greensboro Spartans to a 2-2 draw on Friday night at Alumni Stadium.
It was a tale of two halves, as the Wildcats looked to get their offensive going early. Davidson had just two shots on goal with 17 total coming into the night, but the attack looked sharp at the start. In the 12th minute, Denis Krioutchenkov made a run deep in UNCG's defensive zone and was toppled over by the Spartans goalkeeper in the box. A foul was called, leading to a penalty kick. The junior striker stepped up and buried the shot for his first of the season to give the 'Cats an early advantage.
The offensive persistence continued despite a wave of substitutions coming in midway through the first half. In the 38th minute, Baylen Young found the ball at his feet just outside the box and chipped it back in where it found the head of senior Blake Peterson. Peterson beat the keeper for his second career goal as a Wildcat.
Things turned in the second half when UNCG got on the board in the 65th minute. Five minutes later, the Spartans capitalized on a turnover by the Wildcats in their own territory, which turned to a fast break opportunity. UNCG converted on the shot in the box to tie the score at two goals apiece.
Davidson had a good opportunity to take the lead in the 80th minute when a crossing pass from Noah Louzan found the head of Vincent Bennage in the middle of the goalie box. UNCG keeper Seth Wilson leapt with full extension and snagged the shot at the last moment.
Lucas Beltran made four saves, and eight different Wildcats recorded shots on the night. Krioutchenkov had four, while midfielder Nico Quanbeck sent out three.
