DAVIDSON – The Davidson College men's soccer team sent out 16 shots, and goalkeeper Lucas Beltran made a career-high seven saves in a scoreless draw with the Furman Paladins at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Wildcat attack looked sharp in the early going when Ben Minikel-Lacocque sprung free in the fourth minute. Furman's goalkeeper made a diving save to keep the shot out of the net to deny the Wildcats.
Over the next 20 minutes, the Paladins went on the offensive to the tune of eight shots. Beltran saved four of those attempts, including a full-extension save to the bottom right portion of the goal in the 10th minute. Seven minutes later, the junior from Encinitas, Calif., made a leaping save to keep a Furman shot from going in at the top right corner of the frame.
Beltran made six saves in the first half to keep things scoreless at the break.
Davidson's offense turned it back on in the second half with 11 shots in the final 45 minutes. Denis Krioutchenkov, who finished the night with seven shot attempts, put one on goal just three minutes into the second half, but the save was made by Furman's goalkeeper.
In the final ten minutes, the Wildcats had a corner kick that ended in a header from Ayman Maadir that sailed just over the crossbar. That was followed by two free kicks from inside 25 yards by Krioutchenkov. His free kick shot in the 86th minute hit the upper right corner of the post, missing by mere inches.
