Wildcats Split Doubleheader with Rams

5/3/2024 9:34:00 PM | Baseball

DAVIDSON — The Davidson baseball team split a day-night doubleheader with Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island Friday at Wilson Field.

The Wildcats won the afternoon contest 11-4, then lost the nightcap 19-3 following a three-plus hour delay for lightning and rain.

Going 1-1, the Wildcats moved to 19-26 overall and 5-12 in the A-10.

Game 1
Cider Canon hit two home runs and drove in seven and Wilson Perkins delivered another solid start as the Wildcats won the series opener 11-4.

Canon, who was 3-for-5, hit a three-run home run in the first to provide an early lead, then added a grand slam in the eighth to help the Wildcats put it away. It took the freshman's home run total to seven this season, including six in six games.

Hunter Anderson added a solo home run in the sixth to make it 5-2 and did so one pitch after belting a long foul past the right field pole. It was his fourth home run in four games.

After the Rams pulled to within 5-4 in the top of the eighth, the Wildcats answered with six runs in the next half inning off three hits and one error.

Perkins, meanwhile, was steady on the mound once again, while improving to 5-4. He threw 7.1 innings, allowed seven hits and four earned runs and struck out five. He recorded 1-2-3 innings in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Matt Weber recorded the final five outs, including four strikeouts, and earned his second save of the week.

Game 2
Eli Putnam and Joe Haney hit home runs, but Rhode Island hit six round-trippers, including a sixth-inning grand slam, to win 19-3 and even the series.

Putnam, who entered the weekend as the A-10 home run leader, hit his 14th in the sixth inning, a solo shot to left-center.

Haney hit his first homer of the year in the fifth, also a solo blast to left-center.

The Wildcats' first run came across in the fourth after Jacob Friend doubled, then scored on a Canon groundout to third.
