PHILADELPHIA – Despite a career-best 26 points from Reed Bailey and a late, go-ahead Bobby Durkin 3-pointer, Temple topped the Davidson Wildcats 62-61 in a nailbiter Wednesday night at the Liacouras Center.
Davidson (8-3) led much of the night, but after Durkin's high-arcing trey put the Wildcats in front 61-60 with 10 seconds to play, Owl Elijah Gray scored the game-winner from the post with four seconds left. One final Wildcats' shot missed the mark at the buzzer.
Having scored a previous high of 25 against Charleston Southern Dec. 6, Bailey was 9-of-19 from the floor and 8-of-10 at the foul line against the Owls, while also contributing six boards and four assists. Durkin hit four 3-pointers and added 14 points for the Wildcats.
Jamal Mashburn Jr. scored 19 to lead Temple, which improved to 7-4.
Davidson started the second half with a long three and jumper in the lane from Durkin to build its largest advantage of the night at 42-31. The Owls slowly chipped away at the deficit, though, and eventually took a 60-58 lead on a Shane Dezonie breakaway dunk with 35.5 seconds left. It was the Owls' first lead since the opening minutes.
Deadlocked at 13-13 early, Davidson gained separation with nine unanswered points, bookended by Bailey buckets, to go up 22-13. After Temple got to within four late in the half, the 'Cats responded to lead 31-24 at the break, thanks in part to a Zach Laput putback at the buzzer.
