'Cats Secure Postseason Spot in 2-0 win over Rhode Island

10/27/2024 7:23:00 PM | Women's Soccer

DAVIDSON - In a must win scenario, the Davidson women's soccer team came out on top in a 2-0 victory over Rhode Island inside Alumni Stadium Sunday afternoon.

"I am beyond proud, and so happy for this group to get the result today and competing in postseason play," said head coach Riley Piechnick who enters her first postseason at the helm of the Wildcats. "They are extremely hard working and have clawed their way through every minute this season, and couldn't be more deserving."

"I thought our execution on the ball was sharp today. Our backline and goalkeeper, Emily Smith, had a stellar performance to shut down a talented attacking team. Overall, we played with an intensity and confidence that was a difference maker in the game."

"We've been preparing all season for this moment and I'm looking forward to competing in post season this weekend."

The Wildcats finished the regular season with an 8-7-3 overall record and 4-5-1 mark in the Atlantic 10, securing their spot as the eighth seed in the A-10 Conference Tournament set to begin Nov. 1.

The Wildcats earned their sixth shutout of the 2024 season, five of which happened on their home field. Davidson rounds out the year an impressive 6-1-3 at home.

The 'Cats 26 goals this season rank them seventh in the conference while their 17 allowed in 18 games ranks them fifth in the league.

Dakota Lyons led the offensive efforts for the Wildcats with three points on one goal and one assist while placing bother of her shots on target for the day.

In what has been an impressive rookie season, Sophia Whiddon netted her third goal of the year while landing two of her three shots of the contest on goal. SJ Pak also picked up a point for Davidson, dishing out an assist on the games opening goal to Lyons.

Davidson scored in the 18th and 25th minutes of the first half taking a two-strike lead that it would never relinquish.

In her sixth clean sheet and 18th consecutive start this season, Emily Smith made five saves over 90 minutes. Smith enters the postseason atop the conference as she is fourth in saves (71), fifth in saves per game (3.9), and sixth in both goals against average (.950) and shutouts (6).
