ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In just his second collegiate game, Bobby Durkin drilled a triple from the corner with 13 seconds remaining to lift Davidson over Maryland, 64-61, on day one of 2023 Asheville Championship Friday evening inside the Harrah's Cherokee Center.

The Wildcats will play the winner of Clemson / UAB in Sunday's championship game at 3 p.m. on ESPN2.

Durkin, a freshman from Darien, Ill., came off the bench to pace Davidson (2-0) with 16 points, including a 4-of-5 effort from deep. He was joined in double figures by Villanova transfer Angelo Brizzi, who scored 10 to go with 4 assists and 6 steals.

Brizzi's backcourt mate Grant Huffman also turned in a solid all-around performance with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in 36 minutes of action.

Trailing 9-5 early in the contest, the 'Cats scored 10 unanswered then stretched it into a 17-5 spurt highlighted by eight points from Durkin to go up, 22-14, midway through the opening period. Maryland (1-1) responded with an 11-4 run to retake the lead, but the Wildcats reeled off six straight before going to the half in front, 33-32.

In addition to leading for over 33 minutes of the contest, Davidson was impressive at the defensive end, recording 11 steals, while holding the Terps to just 35 percent (20-57) overall and 5-of-23 from behind the arc.

Perhaps, the biggest play from that end of the floor came in the closing seconds when Durkin knocked the ball into the backcourt to all but run out the clock.

The 'Cats, who drilled of 8-of-15 3-pointers on the night, stretched their advantage to nine early in the second half, 44-35, with a Reed Bailey layup.

After David Skogman pushed the 'Cats' margin back to eight, 59-51, with just over three minutes to play, Maryland put together one last streak and evened the score, 61-61, on Jahmir Young 3-point play with just 37 ticks left.

Young led all players with 18 points. Julian Reese added 16 points for the Terrapins.
