Clemson Rallies Past ‘Cats in Asheville Championship Game

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Clemson erased an 18-point first-half deficit to rally past Davidson, 68-65, in the 2023 Asheville Championship game Sunday afternoon inside the Harrah's Cherokee Center.
The Wildcats, who advanced to the final with their win over Maryland Friday evening, fall to 2-1 on the young season.
Despite the setback, Grant Huffman led the way for the 'Cats with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Teammates Connor Kochera and Hunter Adam both finished with 9 points.
Davidson could not have scripted a better start as it raced out to a 19-2 advantage, capped by a Sean Logan layup at the 12:05 mark.
The Tigers, who drilled 12 3-pointers, shook the sluggish start and responded with a lengthy run of their own to cut the deficit to 25-23 late in the opening period.
After going more than eight minutes without a field goal, Kochera ended the drought just before the half with a 3-pointer to give the 'Cats a 28-23 lead at the break.
Joseph Girard III and PJ Hall paced three Clemson players in double figures with 17 points each.
With Davidson up 36-29 shortly after intermission, Clemson (3-0) scored nine unanswered to take its first lead since the early goings.
The Tigers extended the margin to as many as seven, before the 'Cats had a response of their own and went back in front on back-to-back treys from Hunter Adam, 52-51, with 9:06 left. On the very next possession, Alex Hemenway drained his third 3-pointer of the night to put Clemson up for good.
Trailing 64-56 late, Davidson would not go away, as it got four straight makes at the charity stripe from Reed Bailey and a David Skogman triple to make it, 64-63, with 1:14 to play. After a pair of Hall free throws put the Tigers back up three, the Wildcats had a number chances to tie the score in the final seconds, but their attempts from deep were unsuccessful.
