Wildcats Return to Wilson This Weekend to Host Rhode Island

4/21/2022 3:31:00 PM | Baseball

Having played its last eight games away from campus, the Davidson baseball team returns to Wilson Field this weekend for a three-game set with Rhode Island.

The Atlantic 10 Conference series begins Friday at 6 p.m., with afternoon games set for Saturday and Sunday.

The Wildcats, now 29-6 overall, have won their last nine games and 10 of their previous 11. They're alone in first place in the A-10 with an 8-1 mark, having swept Richmond, won two of three at VCU and won all three at St. Bonaventure last weekend.

Twenty-nine wins is already the third-best single-season wins total in program history, matching the 2014 and 2019 seasons, behind only 2018 (33) and 2017 (35).

LAST TIME OUT
The Wildcats are coming off a 15-5 win at Winthrop on Tuesday night, in which Tyler Douglas homered and drove in five runs. John Hosmer and Trevor Candelaria also homered as seven Wildcats notched multiple hits (Douglas and Ryan Wilson with three apiece) and seven drove in runs.

Bennett Flynn earned the win, throwing 2.1 innings and striking out five while not allowing a hit or a run.

SCOUTING THE RAMS
Rhode Island is one of three teams tied for second place in the A-10 with 6-3 marks, joined by UMass and Saint Joseph's.

In A-10 play, the Rams have taken two of three games at Dayton and at home against St. Bonaventure and UMass, dropping the series opener each time. Addison Kopack leads the Rams with a .320 average and 33 RBIs, while Eric Genther has also driven in 33, and Anthony DePino has hit a team-best 11 home runs.

The Rams (11-25) have played a challenging non-conference schedule, especially early, with trips to Auburn and Tennessee.  They have won three straight and four of their last five, including a 10-5 non-league win at UMass Lowell Wednesday night.

ON THE MOUND
The Davidson pitching staff has set the bar in the A-10 so far, leading the way in numerous statistical categories, including:

• ERA: 3.15 (6th nationally)
• Hits/9: 6.96 (5th nationally)
• Shutouts: 4
• Strikeouts/9: 10.5
• Strikeout-to-walk ratio: 3.44
• WHIP: 1.11 (4th nationally)

Individually, Gabe Levy leads the A-10 with seven saves, while Nolan DeVos has a league-best 75 strikeouts and Ryan Feczko leads in wins (8), WHIP (0.92) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.12).

AT THE PLATE
Catcher Michael Carico continues to set the tone offensively and leads the A-10 in average (.424), on-base percentage (.576), slugging percentage (.824), total bases (103) and hit-by-pitches (19).

He ranks second nationally in on-base percentage, followed closely by teammate Ryan Wilson (.566, 3rd), and is also the Wildcats' leader with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs. Meanwhile, Wilson leads the A-10 with 35 walks, and Parker Nolan has a league-best four triples.

Davidson leads the A-10 with 199 walks and 85 doubles.
