Eric Jones homered and turned in his sixth multi-hit game of the season, but the Davidson baseball team came up short 7-6 at USC Upstate Tuesday in its first game action in a week.
Â
Jones' solo shot to left led off the ninth inning and was his first home run since the Feb. 15 season opener against Towson. It also capped his second three-hit game in the last four outings.
Â
With the Wildcats pulling within a run, Justin Lebek reached base on a walk with two outs in the ninth to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. But Upstate's Will Wheeler struck out Brett Centracchio to end it.
Â
Ultimately, the Wildcats (6-5) were unable to overcome a five-run second inning by the Spartans (8-8), which included two hits and an error.
Â
Davidson led 1-0 after a sacrifice fly by Lebek plated Jones in the first.
Â
The Wildcats added four runs off four hits in the sixth, including two on a Jones double down the right field line and another on a Matt Frey single.
Â
The pitching highlight for Davidson came from reliever Dan Spear, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, then struck out the side in the seventh.
Â
Up Next
Davidson will meet Winthrop Wednesday at Charlotte's BB&T Ballpark as part of the Charlotte Knights' Collegiate Baseball Series. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
