DAVIDSON, N.C. — The 2019 Spring season begins for the Davidson women's tennis team this weekend when they travel Appalachian State and UNC Asheville Saturday and Sunday for afternoon matches at 2 and 3 p.m., respectively.
Davidson (16-5 last year) are facing the Mountaineers for the 33rd time dating back to 1982 and have a 25-7 all-time record in the series. ASU is coming off an 11-11 season a year ago. UNCA (9-11) and the Wildcats have faced each other 11 times since 1983, with the 'Cats holding a commanding 10-1 lead in the series. The two teams met last year and Davidson rolled to a 7-0 win.
In anticipation of the 2019 season, below is a quick look at the Season Preview ....
2018 Spring Record: 16-5, 5-1 A-10
Â
2018 A-10 Championship finish: Lost in the quarterfinals to UMass, 4-0
Â
Key Returners: Alexandra Abele (15-4 singles with 12 wins at No. 3, 4-1 in doubles, two-time A-10 All-Second Team pick) … Gabrielle Centenari (career-best 14-3 singles with 10 wins at No. 4 last year) … Megan Scholvinck (7-12 singles at No. 1 & 2, nine doubles wins) … Samantha Armas (7-3 in singles with a 4-0 mark at No. 6, won final five singles matches played, had a 10-7 doubles mark) … Alyssa Hahn (1-0 singles, 5 doubles wins).
Â
Key Newcomers: Mira Gladstone (Played No. 1 singles at Spruce Creek in Orlando, Fla., named All-Central Florida in 2015 and 2016, individual State finalist in 2015, team State finalist in 2016) … Elizabeth Truluck (Played at South Carolina Connections Academy in Myrtle Beach, S.C., at No. 1 singles, AAA State Champions in 2014 and 2015 at Myrtle Beach, Region Player of the Year in 2014 and 2015, All-Region and All-State Teams in 2014 and 2015).
Â
Big Match-ups in 2019: Cross-county rival match vs. Charlotte, a program-high nine Atlantic 10 matches since joining the league and trips to College of Charleston and East Carolina, which each won 17 matches last season.
Â
What to Watch for: Davidson is coming off an outstanding 16-5 record a year ago with a 5-1 mark in conference play. Assisting the Wildcats to the 16-win season was a season-high 10-match win streak, the second time in the past three years they have had a double-digit win streak. Davidson returns six letterwinners, but only two starters. The team must replace a senior class of Anna Catharine Feaster (four-time A-10 All-First Team pick, closed out a successful four-year career with 52 singles wins and another 57 in doubles going 57-21), Ava Todd (2018 A-10 All-Academic Team, had double-digit singles wins all four years to finish career with a stellar 63-17 record which was the most victories dating back to 2000) and Ally Sexton (six-time A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, closed out career with an impressive 54-22 doubles mark, going 19-4 in A-10 matches) who led the team to 49 wins the past three seasons including an 18-5 record in 2015-16.
Â
Thoughts From the Coach: Susanne Depka, 2nd season: "We had a great season this past year, accomplishing many of our goals. We had tremendous growth throughout the year, which we look to build upon for the 2019 spring season. We continue to stay focused on the process and strive towards improving each match. We are excited to begin competing and welcome the challenge that faces us with nine tough conference opponents this year."
