BOONE, N.C.  — Junior Samatha Armas pulled out a three set match at No. 4 singles to seal up the winning team point and Davidson opened its Spring season with a 4-3 victory at Appalachian State Saturday afternoon at the Deer Valley Racquet Club.

Armas split her first two sets against Kate Earnhardt with scores of 6-2 and 2-6 before she pulled out a 7-5 decision in the final set. The win helped the junior keep her winning streak intact from the end of last season, moving to six in a row.

Davidson (1-0) improved to 26-7 all-time in the series vs. Appalachian State (0-1) and won their season opener for the second time in the past three years.

Alexandra Abele, coming off a 15-win season last year, rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 2 to tie the match up at 2-apiece.

Freshman Elizabeth Truluck won her first collegiate match at No. 5, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win for the 'Cats last singles win. Fellow classmate Mira Gladstone played doubles with Gabrielle Centenari at No. 3 and dropped a 6-0 decision.

The Wildcats grabbed an early 1-0 lead, winning the doubles point behind Megan Scholvinck and Truluck's win at No. 1 (6-3) and the pair of Abele and Armas at No. 2 with a 6-2 victory.

Davidson turns around and goes to UNC Asheville for a 3 p.m. match Sunday, Jan. 20.
