THEÂ SERIES
The Wildcats lead the all-time series 7-4 dating back to the first meeting in 2001. Davidson looks to snap a three-game losing skid to the Crusaders.
LAST TIME OUT
Davidson jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but it was all Dayton from there as the Wildcats dropped its PFL opener at Welcome Stadium, 42-21. Davidson owned the first quarter, out-gaining the Flyers 171-39 and running 20 more plays (25-5). Sophomore Tyler Phelps opened the scoring with a 48-yard scoring strike to Zach Hester followed on the ensuing drive by the sophomore Wesley Dugger's sixth scoring scamper of the year. Dugger recorded 81 yards on 26 carries. Dayton finished with 392 yards (DC, 371) after a dominant third quarter where they found the end zone 3 times, part of 42 unanswered points. Davidson freshman Kendahl Ross scored the final TD of the game, a 1-yard scoring scamper. Three Wildcats registered 7 tackles apiece including junior Bryce Perry-Martin who made a 7-yard sack of Flyer QB Jack Cook.Â
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS
Valpo returned in 2018 following a stunning 2017 campaign that saw them tie for third in the PFL, earning its first winning season since 2003. The Crusaders (0-3, 0-0 PFL) opened the year with losses to three scholarship programs, Duquesne and Youngstown State of the NCAA Division I FCS, and Truman State, a Division II institution. Valpo comes in averaging 16.0 points per game on the back of three quarterbacks. 2017 breakout star, Jimmy Seewald, is 9 for 16 for 74 yards, while Chris Duncan and Trey Bilinski are 46 of 77 combined with two scores apiece. Kyle Cartales paces the offense with 3 TD's (2 rushing, 1 receiving), while Drew Snouffer leads the defense with 37 total tackles and 1.0 sacks.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Cam Cheuvront '18 caught 7 passes for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns, but Davidson fell at Brown Field in 2016, 24-20. Taylor Mitchell '18 completed 18 of 31 passes for 203 and the two scoring tosses, while Trevor Smith '18 knocked through a pair of first quarter field goals from 39 and 34 yards out. Davidson led by six before the the Crusaders rattled off three straight touchdowns to gain a 24-13 advantage late in the third. Cheuvront's second TD of the day brought it within four, but a late Davidson touchdown was called back due to a holding call to give Valpo the victory.
