Davidson's Season Ends in Semis, Fall 19-11 to UMass

RICHMOND, Va. — Davidson saw its outstanding season come to an end in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Championship when Massachusetts doubled up the Wildcats in the second half on its way to a 19-11 win at Robins Stadium on the campus of Richmond.
The top-seeded Minutewomen (15-4) will look for their 10th straight A-10 Championship title in Sunday's finale against the winner of the other semifinal game featuring Richmond and Saint Joseph's.
Despite the setback, the Wildcats had a strong season by finishing with double digit wins for the first time since 2014 with an 11-8 record. It was the second straight year they advanced to the semifinals of the league's championship.
Up 9-6 at the half, UMass put the game away by outscoring the 'Cats 10-5 in the second half and leading by as many as nine goals.
Senior Christine Molinari finished out a solid career by leading Davidson's offensive attack, tallying a hat trick and two assists for five points. Sophia Sgroi had a hat trick of her own, while Olivia Carey added two goals and an assist.
For the Minutewomen, four players scored multiple goals led by the duo of Hannah Burnett and Kiley Anderson with four goals each. Burnett added three assists for seven points. Holly Turner had four points on two goals and two assists.
Trailing 9-6 at the half, Davidson saw its deficit grow to six when UMass scored three goals in a six-minute stretch. Sgroi and Molinari scored the next two goals to make it 12-8 with 21:41, but it was as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the way.
UMass pushed its lead out to as much as nine goals, 18-9, with 7:51 left before Sgroi tallied the final two goals of the season for Davidson in the closing six minutes for a 19-11 finish.
The game started out with UMass jumping out to a 4-0 lead just five minutes in, but Davidson did not back down. Carey started a 3-0 run with her first score of the game and Shannon Blee (30th goal) along with Sam Rippley followed with their own goals to make it 4-3 at 21:45.
Later, another Carey goal kept the Wildcats close at 6-4 before the Minutewomen got a pair of Anderson goals to help push the lead out to five at 9-4.
Molinari capped off a strong first half for herself by scoring the final two goals to make it 9-6 at the half. The senior registered two goals and two assists in the first 30 minutes.
Davidson had a 20-12 advantage in draw controls, while UMass who in shots (41-22) and groundballs (23-14).
Senior goalie Rose Woolson had her 11th double-digit save game in her final career contest, finishing with 13 while picking up two groundballs and forcing two turnovers.
All-Rookie Team member Natalie Junior forced a season-high tying four turnovers and Shayne Antolini tied her career best with eight draw controls. Sgroi also had a career-high eight draw controls.
