Fairfax, Va. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team scored a solid 10-6 road win against George Mason Friday afternoon at Mason Stadium, sending the Patriots to their first Atlantic 10 defeat.
Davidson won its fifth game in the past six overall to move to 7-4 and bumped its league mark up to 2-1, tying them with George Mason (8-3). The Wildcats won their second straight in the series, including last year's come-from-behind 14-13 win at the A-10 Tournament.
Behind Sarah Kopp's two goals, and Olivia Carey's goal and two assists, the 'Cats jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first eight and a half minutes to start the game and never looked back in scoring the road win.
Carey, who added another goal to open the second half, finished with a team-high four points to give her 31 on the season.
Registering a hat trick on the afternoon was Jordan Wood, pushing her team-leading goal total to a career-best 30. It was the sophomore's fifth straight multi-goal game, eighth overall, of the season.
In addition to Kopp's two goals, Christine Molinari, Sophia Sgroi and Shannon Blee each scored once. Lindsay Rufolo and Genna Portner had one assist apiece.
The Patriots' Hailey Johnson and Chachi Kelehan scored two goals each, while Corinne Wessels finished with a team-best four points on a goal and three assists.
Johnson would get GMU on the board at the 11:22 mark in the first half, and Wessels had a goal and assist to make it 5-3 later with under five minutes left.
Wood scored her 10th free-position goal of the season to close out the first half for a 6-3 lead. Carey then made it 7-3 at the 23:23 mark in the second half.
George Mason would score three of the next four goals over a five-minute stretch to get within 8-6, but Davidson shut the Patriots out for the final 11:52 of the game. Sgroi and Molinari iced the win with goals at 3:17 and 2:19 for the final score of 10-6.
Rose Woolson had her third consecutive double-digit save game, and eighth overall, by stopping 14 shots. She also scooped up five of Davidson's game-high tying 27 groundballs, as nine different 'Cats had at least two groundballs on the day.
The 'Cats won the battle in the circle for draws at 12-6 behind Kopp's career-high seven and had one less shot than Mason at 26-25. They also went 3-for-7 on free-position shots.
Davidson returns home to start a three-game homestand with Saint Joseph's up first this Sunday, April 8, at 12 p.m.
