DAVIDSON, N.C. – Although senior Will Robertson extended his hitting streak to 15 games, Davidson baseball suffered a setback Friday, falling 5-2 to Atlantic 10 Preseason favorites Rhode Island at Wilson Field.
The 'Cats slip to 11-9 (2-2 A-10), while Rhode Island improves to 8-10 and picks up the win in their first league game of the season.
Sophomore Max Bazin tallied his second multi-hit game out of the last four, going 2-for-3 and classmate Casey Sutherland worked a solid inning of relief, fanning two of the four batters he faced. Robertson's single came in the eighth inning, bringing his streak to the longest of his career.
The Rams plated a run in the second courtesy of a single and a double, and then added two more the following frame to build a 3-0 lead.
The gap narrowed in the seventh, when the Wildcats took advantage of two passed balls and a wild pitch to score twice. Sophomore Eric Jones singled up the middle and then advanced two bases on back-to-back passed balls, coming home a single to left field from classmate Justin Lebek. Senior Jake Sidwell, who boarded via walk, moved to third on a Bazin single perfectly placed in shallow right, and scored on a wild pitch that got away from the Rams' catcher.
Rhody retaliated the following frame, plating two runs on a Davidson throwing error and following single, ensuring the 5-2 victory.
Sidwell was robbed of two hits twice, as the Rams' third baseman and center fielder each made dynamic, diving catches.
Davidson returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. Please follow @dcbaseball_ for updates regarding weather and time changes.
