
Wildcats Reach Semifinals With Tough 4-2 Win

MASON, Ohio  —  In a tightly-battled match, Davidson prevailed in singles action by scoring a 4-2 quarterfinal win over sixth-seeded Duquesne to reach the semifinals at the A-10 Women's Tennis Championship Friday afternoon.

Again forced indoors due to the weather, the third-seeded Wildcats picked up their 17th win of the season by regrouping from dropping the doubles point to net singles wins at No. 1, 2, 5 and 6. They advance to face seventh-seeded George Washington, which upset the number two seed UMass, Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

It marks the first time since 2009 when the 'Cats were in the Southern Conference they have reached a league tournament semifinal.

Duquesne (16-6) used wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to capture the early match point.

Davidson tied things up when Elaina Cummer was the first to finish in singles action at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-2 decision to run her record to 14-4 with her fourth straight win.

At No. 1 singles, Davidson would go up, 2-1, as Anna Catharine Feaster rallied for back-to-back wins of 6-4 and 6-3 after falling in the first set, 6-4.

Freshman Gabrielle Centenari battled back and forth against Julianne Herman at No. 2, with Herman winning a 13-11 tiebreak in the second set. The Dukes' freshman would retire in the third set, due to injury, giving Centenari, who was leading 5-0, her third straight win and 13th on the season.Â
Duquesne came back to get within one point with a victory at No. 3, but Jenna Brunner capped off the team win with a big three-set triumph at No. 6. She won her first set in a tie-breaker, 7-4, but dropped a 6-3 second-set decision to force the final set. The junior improved to 7-1 on the year with a 6-4 victory and the clinching point.Â
With their four singles wins, the Wildcats ran their team record to 74-36 in singles action this year.
