MASON, Ohio  —  For the first time in their short Atlantic 10 membership, the Davidson women's tennis team will be playing for the league championship title after they collected their fourth consecutive win with a 4-1 victory against seventh-seeded George Washington Saturday afternoon in the semifinals at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
Â
Davidson will face top-seeded VCU for the first time in program history Sunday morning at 10 a.m. The Rams are making their fourth straight appearance in the championship match and have won in their previous three straight trips there.
The team has shown a lot of resilience, heart and belief this week," said second-year head coach Sara Anundsen. "As a coach, it's amazing to see our players believe in themselves and want to be in those tough pressure situations. Embracing those moments is something we have worked on all year. Our fitness has been a huge factor and we have Chad Emmons to thank for that. He has done a phenomenal job with our team and he deserves a lot of credit. Susanne, Gerald and I are incredibly proud of this team and look forward to competing tomorrow."
Â
The third-seeded Wildcats ran their record to 18-4, the most wins since a 19-win campaign in 2008, which happened to be the last time they also reached a conference tournament final when they were members of the Southern Conference.
Â
Both teams played earlier this year, with Davidson prevailing 5-2, and it dominated again in the second go-around. Helping the 'Cats to open up a 1-0 lead with doubles wins was Elaina Cummer and Sarah Stein at No. 2 with a nice 6-4 victory and the freshmen tandem of Megan Scholvinck and Gabrielle Centenari at No. 3 with a 6-3 win. It was Cummer and Stein's sixth victory on the year, while the first-year players collected their first triumph together.
Â
GW (8-14) would tie the match, striking first in singles at No. 2, but Davidson then rattled off three straight singles victories to clinch its trip to the championship match, 4-1.
Â
Leading the way was senior Cummer, who is closing her career out in impressive fashion. She won her personal and season-best fifth straight match with a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 5 to run her record to a career and team-high 15-4 (11-3 at No. 5).
Â
Brunner, who clinched the team win, won her eighth match of the year in 10 overall with a strong 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 6, while Anna Catharine Feaster took home a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 win at the top spot. The sophomore won her 13th match of the year and the 29th of her career. Â
Â
During the 'Cats' three team wins at the A-10 Championship, they have gone 10-2 in singles play.
