MASON, Ohio  — Playing in its first Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship title match, Davidson saw its fantastic season end in a hard-fought battle with VCU, 4-2, Sunday morning at Lindner Family Tennis Center.
Â
Davidson, which had its four-match win streak halted, finished the year with an outstanding 18-5 record. It was the most wins since the 2008 team had 19. VCU moved to 12-9, winning its fourth consecutive A-10 tournament title and earned the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship.
Â
The Wildcats tried their best in attempting to stop VCU from claiming another title, playing four matches of three sets along with forcing the Rams into four tie-breakers.
Â
Megan Scholvinck and Gabrielle Centenari picked up their second doubles win together to tie things up at 1-1 in doubles play, but VCU would get a 6-4 win from its No. 1 team to claim the team point. The pair of Anna Catharine Feaster and Ally Sexton finished their year with a team-best 13-5 record and a combined 30-10 in two seasons.
Â
In singles competition, the Rams started off by taking first set victories on courts one, three, four, and five, while Centenari and Jenna Brunner won first sets, each in tiebreakers, on courts two and six, respectively.Â
Â
VCU went up 3-0 after securing wins at No. 5 and 4 where Elaina Cummer and Scholvinck played. Cummer lost a first-set tie-breaker (7-1) and then dropped a 6-2 decision in the second set to close out her storied career. The senior ended her four-year career with a career and team-best 15-5 record, giving her a total of 42 singles wins.
Â
Scholvinck played one of the four three-set matches, falling 6-3 in the first set before coming back with a 6-2 decision. The first-year's season ended though with a 6-4 third-set setback to finish 11-6 on the season.
Â
Feaster got the 'Cats on the board at the top singles position. She forced a third set, winning 7-5 in the second after she dropped a 6-3 decision to start the match. The sophomore finished off the comeback with a nice 6-3 victory in the last set to cap her season off with a 14-6 record. She ended the year on a three-match winning streak.
Thanks to Brunner, Davidson made it 3-2 when the junior won her ninth match of the year by closing out her match with a 6-4 win in the second set after winning the first set with a 7-2 tie-breaker win.
The match ended on court two where VCU's Anna Rasmussen, after falling in the first set to Centenari 7-3 in the tie-breaker, won consecutive 6-2 sets to clinch the match at 4-2. The freshman Centenari had a solid collegiate debut season, going 13-7 on the season.
Sophomore Ava Todd's match at No. 3 went unfinished after the first two sets were split, 6-1 and 6-7 (7-9). She end her second year with a 14-6 mark to give her a 33-9 singles record in two seasons.
Davidson concluded the year as a team with a 79-40 singles record, while going 33-28 in doubles matches.
