ORLANDO, Fla. – Avry Holmes scored 22 points to lead five Clemson players in double figures as the Tigers defeated Davidson, 95-78, in the opening round of the 2016 Tire Pros Invitational Thursday at the HP Field House.
The Wildcats will face Missouri on Friday at 11:30 a.m. on ESPNU.
Jaron Blossomgame (17), Gabe DeVoe (16), Donte Grantham (12) and Sidy Djitte (12) also went over the 10-point plateau for Clemson (2-0), which shot 51.7 percent from the floor and went 26-of-32 (.813) from the charity stripe.
Despite the setback, Peyton Aldridge led Davidson (1-1) with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Jack Gibbs, in his first game back, added 18 points, while backcourt mates Jordan Watkins and Jon Axel Gudmundsson contributed 12 and 11, respectively.
Up 29-28, midway through the first half, Clemson closed the period on an 18-6 run to take a 47-34 lead into the break.
For the second straight contest, the Wildcats had five players with two fouls each prior to intermission.
After starting 5-of-7 behind the 3-point arc, Davidson finished only 11-of-40 (.275) from long range. In addition, the Wildcats shot just 39.7 percent overall.
Clemson stretched its lead to as many as 21 early in the second half and didn't allow the Wildcats closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Trailing 67-47, Davidson used a 12-4 spurt to cut the deficit to 71-59, but the Tigers responded with a 14-6 run to push the margin back to 20.
Davidson held a 42-32 advantage on the glass, but committed 16 turnovers (13 first half), which resulted in 21 points for Clemson at the other end.
