Aldridge and Late Run Lead 'Cats Past Appalachian State in Opener, 86-74

DAVIDSON, N.C. – In addition to a game-high 31 points from Peyton Aldridge, Davidson closed on a 19-6 run to defeat Appalachian State, 86-74, in both team's season opener Saturday night at Belk Arena.
Aldridge, a junior from Leavittsburg, Ohio, finished 11-of-18 from the floor, drilled 4 treys and grabbed 7 rebounds in 40 minutes of action. It marks the second time the preseason all-conference selection has gone over the 30-point plateau (32 at Richmond 1/25/16) in his career.
Trailing 68-67 with 5:44 to play, Jon Axel Gudmundsson sparked the Wildcats' game-changing spurt with his first career 3-pointer, followed by a pair of free throws. The freshman scored 11 points and handed out 5 assists in his collegiate debut before fouling out.
Rusty Reigel also scored in double figures with 13 points, while adding 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.
Appalachian State (0-1) led by as many as nine on separate occasions in the opening half before going to the break up, 37-33. The Wildcats had five players commit at least two fouls in the first period.
In a game that featured 11 ties and 16 lead changes, Davidson (1-0) shot 47.6 percent overall and drilled 9-of-22 (.409) of its 3-pointers.
Ronshad Shabazz (11), Jake Babic (11), Griffin Kinney (10) and Tyrell Johnson (10) hit double digits for the Mountaineers, who were held to just 39 percent from the floor.
Appalachian finished with a 39-38 edge on the glass.
