DAVIDSON, N.C. – Catcher Tyler Agard's single to left field lifted the Davidson baseball team over the La Salle Explorers, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. The come-from-behind win clinched the first-ever A-10 series for the Wildcats.
With the victory, Davidson improved to 12-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while La Salle fell 10-12 on the season and 1-2 in the league.
Agard went 2-for-2 on the day with two singles and two RBI to lead the Wildcats as La Salle recorded one run off eight hits and one error. Davidson picked up its two runs off three hits and zero errors. Shortstop Collin McGowan led both teams with three hits and one RBI in four at bats.
La Salle took an early 1-0 lead in the second off two hits, before the Wildcats matched it in the seventh off Agard's single up the middle. Holding the Explorers scoreless for two-straight innings, Davidson clinched the victory with the help from an error by McGowan that put shortstop Alec Acosta on base to start off the ninth.
A walk and a sacrifice bunt from left fielder Ty Middlebrooks would advance Acosta to third before Agard sent him home for his second RBI.
On the mound, RHP Ryan Lowe started the day off for Davidson, allowing the lone Explorer run off five hits and picking up three strikeouts in six innings. RHP Josh Smutzer recorded a strikeout in 1.2 innings pitched, before RHP Matt Saeta pitched the final 1.1 innings, facing five batters and recording a strikeout for the win as he moved to 4-0 on the season.
Five pitchers threw for La Salle, including RHP Tom Fazzini, who recorded the loss (0-2) off one run and one hit with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
The Wildcats will hit the road Tuesday, March 24 to face High Point in a mid-week matchup starting at 6:30 p.m.
