
Davidson Splits with Akron in Doubleheader Saturday

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson baseball team split with the Akron Zips Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader at Wilson Field, falling 3-2 in game one before defeating Akron 7-2 in game two.

Highlights
After the contest got pushed back to 2:30 p.m. due to rain, the Davidson Wildcats fell, 3-2, to the Zips to open the day.
Akron got the ball rolling on the first pitch as Daulton Mosbarger hit a first-pitch homerun over the right field fence to quickly make it a 1-0 ball game. The Zips completed a three-run, four-hit inning for their only three runs of the game.
Davidson collected a run in the bottom of the fourth when Lee Miller scored David Daniels (E6) on a double down the left field line that cut the Akron lead to two. And then made it a 3-2 ball game on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth, but could not catch the Zips.
Akron recorded its three runs off 10 hits and had two errors, while the Wildcats picked up two runs off seven hits with no errors. Center fielder Andrew Pope led Davidson with two hits and two putouts.
On the mound, Clark Beeker got the start for the Wildcats, allowing three runs and 10 hits, while striking out nine in 7.1 innings for the loss. Ryan Lowe pitched the final 1.2 innings for Davidson, facing five batters and picking up one strikeout.
John Valek got the win for Akron, allowing one run, four hits and picking up one strike out in six innings. Matt LaRocca earned the save facing four batters and allowed one run.

Highlights
The Davidson baseball team recorded three two-run innings to run by the Akron Zips, 7-2, in the second game of the day Saturday at Wilson Field.
After two runs in the first for the Zips, the Wildcats got things going in their first at bat with a run off two hits, which were both doubles. Davidson later took its first lead of the day in the second as Lowe picked up two RBI with a double to left field to make it a 3-2 ball game.
Davidson had another two-run inning off two hits, which came in the fifth. Shortstop Alec Acosta fired off a double to right field that scored Sam Foy (HBP) and later, Acosta was brought in by centerfielder Andrew Pope with a single to right field for the 'Cats to take the 5-2 lead.
The Wildcats secured the contest in the eighth off of a two-run, four-hit performance that secured the contest.
Davidson scored the seven runs off 12 hits and had two errors, while Akron recorded seven hits and three runs with no errors. Lowe led the Wildcats with three hits off four at bats, three RBI and scored two runs. Acosta also turned in a three-for-four performance and scored one run and had one RBI. Three other Wildcats recorded multiple hits.
On the mound, Rob Bain got the win, allowing six hits, two runs and throwing five strikeouts in seven innings. Matt Saeta pitched an inning, picking up two strikeouts, while Cody White threw the final inning and faced three batters.
The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow, March 15 to complete the three-game series against the Zips at 1 p.m.
