DAVIDSON, N.C. – In its second close Atlantic 10 game in a row, the Davidson women's soccer team fell just short in a 1-0 defeat at home to Richmond Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.
After falling in a tough 1-0 double-overtime game at Duquesne last Sunday, the Wildcats dropped their second straight one-goal decision to fall to 4-9-1 overall and 1-2 in league play. Richmond remained unbeaten in A-10 action at 2-0-1 and improved to 8-5-1 overall.
The lone score of the contest came in the 82nd minute off a free kick. After a foul about 25 yards out, the Spiders lined up with three players, two of them faking touches on the release and the third, Ashley Riefner, then drilled a low-liner that found its way to the back of the net.
Davidson had a chance to grab the lead first in the early goings, getting a header by Vicky Bruce in the box that went off the cross bar and straight down before getting cleared out. Stephanie Piperno had three shots on goal, but each one was stopped by the Spiders' Katie Brennan.
Shots went 10-7 in favor of Richmond, while Davidson a 4-1 edge on corner kicks.
Rachel Locke finished with a pair of saves, while Brennan, who remained unbeaten in goal, earned three saves.
The Wildcats wrap up their last road games of the regular season with trips to George Washington and Virginia Commonwealth, Oct. 17-19.
