LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior forward Finley Amato scored three times, twice off of feeds from Melissa Funsten, as the Davidson field hockey team powered its way past the MAC's Ball State by a score of 4-1 at Trager Field in Louisville, Ky., on Sunday afternoon.
Funsten also added a goal of her own, ending the weekend with two goals and three assists. Amato finished as the team's leader in scoring with four goals on the weekend. The 'Cats move to 2-2 on the season with the win.
Amato got things started early for the Wildcats, knocking in her second of the season just over five minutes into the contest. She was able to take a pass from Funsten off a penalty corner and put it past BSU goalkeeper Maddi Elliott for the 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals evened the scored just before the end the half. Allie White received a pass from Tarel Teach off a penalty corner and deflected it in as the two teams found themselves tied 1-1 at halftime.
The duo of Amato and Funsten combined once again just minutes into the second half for the go-ahead goal. Again, Amato took a Funsten pass off of a penalty corner and sent it in for the score as the 'Cats went ahead 2-1. Less than four minutes later, Funsten knocked in a loose ball in a scramble in front of the net to stretch Davidson's advantage to two goals at 3-1.
Amato would add one more score for the hat trick with less than ten minutes to play in the game. She dribbled the ball into the circle and sent it by Elliott to give the 'Cats the 4-1 win.
Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Fisher was solid in the cage, posting five stops on the day. Amato recorded a team-high 10 shots, eight of which came on goal. Funsten, Annie Evans and Tyler McFayden each had two on the day as the Wildcats had 19 shots to the Cardinals' nine. The 'Cats were able to score off two of their ten penalty corners.
Natalie Jardell had a team-high three shots for BSU, while Bianca Velez recorded a defensive save. Elliott had eight saves in the contest.
Davidson will hit the road once again next weekend as it heads to Virginia to take on James Madison. The Wildcats and the Dukes will face off on Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. in Harrisonburg.
