DETROIT, Mich. – Davidson traveled to Detroit, Mich., for a National Lacrosse Conference game on Easter Sunday, but was unable to return home victorious as it saw a 7-5 halftime lead get wiped out and dropped a 12-9 decision to host Detroit Mercy Sunday afternoon in women's lacrosse.
The Titans (4-7, 3-1 SoCon) netted their first win in the series against Davidson (4-8, 1-2 NLC) as Emily Boissonneault led the second-half comeback by scoring three of her game-high five goals in the half. Detroit outscored the Wildcats 7-2 overall in the stanza.
Seven different Wildcats found the back of the net on the day with Emily Rademacher and Erin Keitel going off for two goals each. Leading scorer Ann Fucigna was held to just one goal after scoring 14 in the previous four games combined.
Anna Eidem followed Boissonneault with three of her own goals and Tara Grady was the third Titan to have a multi-goal game on the afternoon with two.
Detroit opened the second half scoring three straight goals, two of them by Boissonneault, in a seven-minute stretch that turned a 7-5 Wildcat lead into an 8-7 advantage for the Titans, which they would never give back. Jenna Mugele cut the lead to one, 9-8, at the 11:53 mark on a free-position attempt, but Detroit countered with goals from Eidem and Grady at the 10:07 and 7:00 marks for an 11-8 score.
Fucigna gave Davidson its last score of the game with under two minutes to go for an 11-9 score and Detroit tacked on one more goal by Boissonneault for the final margin of three.
After the Wildcats found themselves down 4-2 with just under 14 minutes gone to start the game, they started to find their offensive rhythm. Alanna Parker scored her 13th goal and shortly there after, Keitel netted her second goal of the half to tie things up at 4-all with 11:41 left in the half.
Detroit took a one-goal lead four minutes later, but Davidson closed the half in a flurry with three straight goals, including Rademacher's ninth goal of the season with just five ticks on the clock that made it 7-5 at the break. The freshman had started the rally with a score at the 4:37 mark and Lindsay Cooper added the second goal of the run two minutes later.
Davidson had a season-best 30 groundballs and was 4-for-7 in free-position shots. Emily Cooke, Rademacher and Paige Logan each tallied four groundballs, while Liz Edwards and Erin McGuire paced the defense with two forced turnovers. Davidson had nine caused turnovers for the game.
Junior Jessica Melby helped hold the Titans to just 1-of-12 on free-position shots and was one save away from matching her career-high set last year, finishing with 15 for the game.
The Wildcats stay on the road for their next NLC game, traveling the Washington, D.C., to play Howard, April 15.
