Samford Wins Series Opener Over Davidson Baseball

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson cut a six-run deficit to one in the middle innings, but Samford answered with 10 runs in the last three innings to claim a 16-6 win over the Wildcats in Southern Conference baseball action Friday night at Wilson Field.

Senior right fielder Jake Berman led Davidson (16-23, 7-15 SoCon) offensively, going 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBI, and senior centerfielder Drew Gadaire also drove in two runs while going 2-for-5.

Centerfielder Philip Ervin went 3-for-4 with two walks and three RBI to lead Samford (27-16, 14-8 SoCon). Third baseman Tommy Corbin also had three hits and drove in two runs, while first baseman Saxson Butler went 2-for-4 with two walks and two RBI.

The 'Cats fell into an early hole, allowing four runs on three hits and two errors in the first inning, and then yielded RBI-hits to Butler and Ervin in the second inning for a 6-0 disadvantage.

Freshman LHP Henry Sisson (3-2) settled in though in the third inning and held the Bulldogs hitless through the sixth inning, allowing Davidson to battle back. With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, sophomore catcher Daniel Gerow and senior first baseman Calvin Sigelbaum hit back-to-back singles, and then Berman drove in the 'Cats first run in with a double. Later with two outs, Gadaire drove in Sigelbaum and Berman with a double down the left field line for two more runs.

With the Wildcats trailing 6-3 with one out and runners on first and second the following inning, RHP Tyler Vanderheiden relieved Samford starter RHP Charles Basford (7-1), but Vanderheiden walked Gerow, Sigelbaum and Berman to plate two Davidson runs and load the bases. The 'Cats were unable to do anymore damage though as RHP Michael Gunter relieved Vanderheiden and induced the final two outs to protect Samford's lead.

Sisson surrendered a hit to the first batter he faced in the seventh inning, second baseman Zeth Stone, and was immediately relieved by senior RHP Brian Russell. Stone scored on wild pitch later in the inning and a sacrifice fly gave Samford an 8-5 lead.

Sisson finished with a line of seven runs allowed (four earned) on six hits, three walks and a hit batsmen, while striking out seven.

The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the eighth inning, scoring six runs on just three hits, taking advantage of a throwing error and four walks, and then added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Davidson will look to even the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
