Berman Homers Twice In Davidson Baseball Loss at Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Senior right fielder Jake Berman drove in all three of Davidson's runs as Western Carolina claimed the Southern Conference series with a 5-3 win in baseball action Sunday at Hennon Stadium.
Berman went 2-for-4, hitting a solo home run with two outs in the third inning and a two-run home run with two outs in the fifth inning after a triple by senior first baseman Calvin Sigelbaum (1-for-3). Senior second baseman James Cerbie also went 2-for-4 for Davidson (10-15, 3-9 SoCon).
Third baseman Bradley Strong went 2-for-3 with three RBI to pace Western Carolina (20-9, 6-3 SoCon), while right fielder Cody Jones went 3-for-3 with a walk.
Western Carolina led 2-0 after the first two innings. Second baseman Ross Heffley hit an RBI-double down the left field line in the first inning and centerfielder Julian Ridings drove in a run in the second on a base hit through the right side.
Berman's solo shot in the third inning brought Davidson within one, but Strong drove in two runs in the bottom half of the inning with a base hit through the right side with the bases loaded for a 4-1 WCU lead.
Berman's two-run blast in the fifth brought the 'Cats within one again, but Strong drove in Jones from third base with an infield single for a 5-3 advantage.
RHP Jeremy Null (4-0) earned the win allowing the three runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out six in seven innings. RHP Tyler Powell pitched a scoreless inning and a third before LHP Vance Chavis earned the final two outs for the save.
Sophomore RHP Danny Mooney (1-2) was charged with the loss, pitching two innings and facing two batters in the third inning and surrendering four runs on eight hits. Freshman LHP Rob Bain pitched into the fifth inning before he was relieved by freshman RHP Ryan Lowe, who allowed just one hit and one walk and struck out three in three innings. Freshman RHP Matt Saeta recorded the final two outs.
Davidson will conclude a stretch during which eight of-nine games have been on the road at USC Upstate Tuesday at 6 p.m.
